Ultimate German Beginner-Intermediate (Coursebook)

I must start off by saying that I have never had a German class, neither at any formal institution nor with a tutor, friend, or the like. Therefore, I cannot judge this text against any formal course of German.
But, I am very interested in learning languages, and have used many textbooks in the past, even some made for use in a school environment. So, I feel that I can give a fairly good critique of this book.
Out of any foreign language textbook I have used, I find that this book is, if not THE best, one of the best I have had the experience of learning a language with. I am self-taught in all of the languages I have been learning, except for three years of Spanish I took in school. Therefore, I know that textbooks need to have certain aspects to be able to be used sufficiently for self-study, and this book has them.
Although there is no CD, many resources can be found online for the pronunciation of German, and the pronunciation notes in the beginning of the book, I find, are very good ones. Therefore, I do not feel that pronunciation should be much of a struggle to learn.
I very much like the structure of the chapters in this book, and find that it works very well for learners. Each chapter begins with a Dialogue or two, and their translation(s). These are not too difficult and not too long or too short, and they are written to be able to be mostly understood based on knowledge from previous chapters. Following the Dialogue, there is a section for Grammar and Structure, which teaches material a reader has not yet learned from a previous chapter. There are then vocabulary lists and exercises, to reinforce the material. By the end of a chapter, a reader should be able to understand the dialogue, or at least almost all of it.
The book also provides review quizzes after every ten chapters, as well as practice readings written like articles one might see in the news or on a blog, et cetera.
Overall, I find that this book is a very good introduction to the German language for anyone interested, whether a student, or just a casual learner such as myself.

Excellent for a German "over-the-counter" course!

The best way to learn german is by living in a German-speaking country. If you can't do that, this course will take you a long way toward proficiency in German. BUT, I would say that the accompanying CD's are a must for the novice. I took 4 years in college, and still read German newspapers on line, but wanted something to brush up. I have used several language courses (Barron's, Pimsleur, Tell Me More, etc.) I would rank this one in the top 2. Somehow, they strike a good balance of natural conversation exposure, phrase-learning, useful vocabulary, grammar, and culture tips. They pack more into their course than most. As far as how advanced you can go with Ultimate German, they do a good job there, too. Normally, passive voice, subjunctive, and other more difficult grammar structures are either not covered by other language courses, or given shallow coverage. The Ultimate German advanced book, and even the beginner-intermediate levels cover these, and in a very natural way...much earlier on than other courses. My library had both sets. I ripped the CD's (legal) and burned them onto discs, as well as put them on my MP3. I then bought just the book on Amazon. That way, I got a great course for pennies on the dollar. I can't imagine that the "new complete course" can do much better, so I went with this last version before they changed over. Glad I did. Viel vergnügen!

It tottaly worth the price

I already read the "The Everything Learning German" (more than twice...) by Ed Swick and I would say that the Swick's book is more didactic and easy to read for a truly beginner, even though I'm still in lesson 11 in the "Ultimate German". There are some points that are said in the "Ultimate German" book that Swick's doesn't covers and vice-versa and appears also that the Swick's is more updated. But anyway, the book is a good "next-step" and a cheap one, you would spend some months to fully study it.
