About the Author
Thich Nhat Hanh (pronounced tik-not-hawn) is a world-renowned writer, scholar, spiritual leader, and Zen Buddhist monk. Since age sixteen, he has been a Buddhist monk, a peace activist, and a seeker of the way. He has survived three wars, persecution, and more than thirty years of exile from his native Vietnam, when he was banned by both the non-Communist and Communist governments for his role in undermining the violence he saw affecting his people. He is still the master of one of the most prominent temples in Vietnam, and his lineage is traceable directly to the Buddha himself. A prolific author, Nhat Hanh has written more than one hundred books of philosophy, poetry, and fiction. Currently, Nhat Hanh lives in a monastic community in southwestern France that he founded, called Plum Village, where he teaches, writes, gardens, and works to help refugees worldwide. In this national bestseller, Zen monk and social activist Thich Nhat Hanh draws parallels between these two traditions that have them walking, hand in hand, down the same path to salvation. In Christianity, he finds mindfulness in the Holy Spirit as an agent of healing. In Buddhism, he finds unqualified love in the form of compassion for all living things. And in both he finds an emphasis on living practice and community spirit.

The thread that binds the book is the same theme that draws many Christians toward Buddhism: mindfulness. Great commentary on both Buddhism and Christianity

I don't always like Thich Nhat Hanh's way of looking at Buddhism--he's sometimes too touchy-feely for me, and he gets a little repetitious with what I think can be interpreted as an over-emphasis on mindfulness at the apparent expense of the other seven parts of the eightfold path. Also, I'm not particularly interested in Christianity.

That said, this is a great book! By focusing on similarities and relationships between the dharma and Christian practice, to which most westerners will relate, he makes Buddhist concepts like emptiness much more "graspable" to the western mind. I imagine there are Christians who will object to some of his interpretations of Christian doctrine, but overall, it's a good study.

I facilitate a Buddhist meditation practice group in Florida, and know there are many Christians who are interested in Buddhism, meditation, etc., but don't want to give up their Christian beliefs. This book provides a good framework for integrating the two practices. I highly recommend it, and also the companion work, "Going Home: Jesus and Buddha as Brothers."

"If we are only who we are, then who are we? And, If I AM is not who I am, then who will be?"

I have studied both these books and thought about the arguments in both of them for several years now. The one gives me reasons, some of which are based on the Bible, why I should think of my future as superior to those who don't believe in the same theology as myself. The other concentrates on practical techniques to be more aware of both my impermanence, how to look deeper and be more compassionate to those around me, to be more open to change (independent of theology).... But, also my permanent divine inheritance as a living gift inside of the present moment. I prefer the second.

Many Christians are quick to criticize those who teach the Buddhist and Hindu Yogic techniques of individual contemplative prayer as being un-Christian. But, after 40 years of practicing them, I am certain they are very similar to those which Jesus studied and spent a lot of time practicing when he walked on earth the for first time about 2000 years ago. One criticism is that this type of contemplative prayer does not request anything from God, it only seeks to understand how we can exist better as human beings in this present moment. Therefore, the argument goes, since we are trying to understand ourself better instead of God and since human nature is flawed in itself (something which I totally agree with) we are doomed to suffer repeated failure in these attempts. This argument does not consider the possibility that God doesn't start out as a person outside of us (in the Church or the Bible for instant) and isn't already existing inside of us helping us to overcome these failings. But, we know ourselves from our personal experience and also the Bible teaches in the book of John and elsewhere that, when we call upon Him for help (through Jesus Christ), that God does exist as a Holy Spirit in us. For too long the traditional way to follow Jesus has been to try and collect a larger group of worshippers than others and help convince ourselves that we don't need to go to the trouble of learning more about what others believe. As individuals we definitely do need groups and higher powers in order to solve problems that are difficult. The tragedy, is that in the past this has lead to many religious wars and untold suffering. For our human nature tends to try convince ourselves that the particular people outside of these groups are different, or "unsaved". It is taught that they need to be looked down on and need to be separated out from us. But, Jesus Christ himself did not do this, for he taught that we should look up on others this way. But He taught us we need to understand how others are ourselves. We need to do this so we can love them as ourselves. And, the United States of America was founded by our forefathers with a constitution of rules of civil government and society in order to create a more perfect union of all of us in order that these tragedies of egotistical religious and societal Church self-promotion might happen less often.

Living Buddha, Living Christ is one of my top ranked "spiritual" books. Hanh does a very excellent job of explaining the
beautiful and amazing unity of Buddhism and Christianity....very deep and insightful. He also is able to express
what Christianity is all about even more deeply and better than a number of Christian writers which in and of itself
demonstrates how our spiritual selves are more alike than different in nature....a real wake up call for all of us!
I believe we are more alike than different and like Hahn I also participate in religious disciplines other than my own
and find it very satisfying and quite the "gift".

Hoped the writer would have had more personal experience with these machines before writing a book on it. Th author lacks info regarding actual personal experience of different types of alkalizing filters vs. Just being acquainted with the basic science of these products.

Maxine Hong Kingston (China Men) distills the dire lessons of her mother's mesmerizing "talk-story" tales of a China where girls are worthless, tradition is exalted and only a strong, wily woman can scratch her way upward. The author's America is a landscape of confounding white "ghosts"--the policeman ghost, the social worker ghost--with equally rigid, but very different rules. Maxine Hong Kingston grew up in two worlds. There was "solid America," the place her parents emigrated to, and the China of her mother's "talk-stories." In talk-stories women were warriors and her mother was still a doctor in China who could cure the sick and scare away ghosts, not a harried and frustrated woman running a stifling laundromat in California. But what is story and what is truth? In China, a ghost is a supernatural being; in America it is anyone who is not Chinese. In addition, underlying even the most exciting talk-stories of Chinese women warriors is the real oppression of Chinese women: "There is a Chinese word for the female 'I' - which is 'slave.' " In an attempt to figure out her world, Maxine Hong Kingston finds herself creating stories of her own, filling in the blanks her mother has not told her because her daughter is, after all, not true Chinese and thus cannot be completely trusted. Can these new stories explain why she had trouble speaking in the American schools? Can they help her understand the aunt who committed adultery and whose existence is denied? Crossing the Line

The Woman Warrior, by Maxine Hong Kingston, captures readers with her own interpretation of what it was like to grow up as a female Chinese American. As a little girl, she came to America with her family. Despite being in a new country, she had to deal with the old traditions from her homeland. Kingston hears different legends which she pieces together to create her woman warrior. It becomes her source of strength in a society that rejected both her sex as well as her race. The book, divided into five interwoven stories, is at times confusing as it jumps around. Nevertheless she does a great job explaining her life while growing up. The first story, called "No Name Woman," tells of her paternal aunt who bears a child out of wedlock and is harried by the villagers and by her family into drowning herself. The family now punishes this taboo-breaker by never speaking about her and by denying her name. However, Kingston breaks the family silence by writing about this rebel whom she calls "my forebear." The next story is called "White Tigers." It is a myth about a heroine named Fa Mu Lan, who fights in place of her father and saves her village. This story became the Disney movie, Mulan. "Sharman" is a story of Kingston's mother. It explores what it was like to study as a woman to become a doctor in China. "At the Western Palace" is about Kingston's aunt who comes to America and discovers that her husband has remarried in America. Finally, the last story, "A Song for a Barbarian Reed Pipe" is about Kingston's own experience in America when she first arrived. She explains what it was like to be a newcomer in a strange culture. Kingston constantly mentions that her friends and she are ghosts because they are American. All of the people who surround her family are ghosts, except for the Chinese people who live on the Gold Mountain, a section of Chinatown in San Francisco. Kingston feels like a ghost herself, " .... We had been born among ghosts, were taught by ghosts, and were ourselves ghost-like. The Americans call us a kind of ghosts" (p.183). The interpretation of what ghosts mean in this book is difficult to figure out. It could show how some people view a person from a different culture with ignorance as if she doesn't exist. Kingston's The Woman Warrior has some similarities with The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. First of all, both stories are written by Chinese American authors about their cultural heritage. Both novels deal with major concerns faced by Chinese American women. Living with their traditional culture in American society, Chinese-American women suffer problems of cultural conflicts. However, there are differences that make each work distinct. The Joy Luck Club is fiction and is not personal. It is also more likely to be read for pleasure. The Woman Warrior portrays a first hand view of the cultural differences between the United States and China. Also, Kingston succeeds in combining her emotions with her experiences. The Woman Warrior is a fascinating book. One of the most amazing aspects of this book is Kingston's ability to show how silence is a form of communication and how it shaped her being. Her mother tells her to be silent, yet she goes against her cultural standards by talking about her aunt. This act of will on Kingston's part offers the readers her ancestry. The expectation of silence can be simplified into a symbol of oppression. As a Korean-American, I felt the emotions and understood how Kingston felt for being a stranger to a new culture. Her internal struggle to fit into two different societies is difficult. I personally recommend this book to anyone interested in reading about the experience of one Chinese-American woman. It is not the definitive story of Chinese-American women's experience, but it is a very vivid and well-written account of one woman's life. Pg. 209. Challenging, rewarding read

This is a remarkably intelligent, personal account of success, failure, frustration, and identity. No, the writing and structure are not straightforward, and yes, some of the plotline may be disturbing. But this is ultimately an intellectually rewarding read, and a personally emotionally moving experience.
The anti-feminist backlash this novel seems to elicit (e.g., on this review page) should be testimony to how provocative it is, and how many assumptions it can challenge.
As for it being a misrepresentation of Chinese culture, well, it's a subjective account. It's the culture through Maxine's eyes (and her family's eyes); it is not meant to be an objective anthropological study. And I did not find it at all exoticizing. In fact, it's a shame that MHK often gets mentioned in the same sentence as Amy Tan -- beyond the superficial similarity of both being Asian-American women, they have little in common. MHK does none of the silly exoticization that AT does, and at least to me, does not engage in the "Asians must be rescued by Western culture" ideology of AT. This is ultimately a personal, autobiographical account, that is neither judgmental nor self-pitying.

Linda Beutler has been the curator of the Rogerson Clematis Collection since 2007, and in 2013, she was elected the first woman and first American president of the International Clematis Society. She is an active member of the Hardy Plant Society of Oregon and many other garden and plant societies. She lectures nationally on numerous gardening topics and is a garden writer for both local and national publications, including "Organic Gardening", "Pacific Horticulture", and "Portrait of Portland".

Unabashed Farce—Entertaining!

The death of Anne de Bourgh brings Darcy (saddened) and Colonel Fitzwilliam (now rich and in need of a wife) back to Rosings just days after Elizabeth rejected Darcy’s proposal. The main characters are Anne (shown through candid observations in her journal over the past year), Lady Catherine (who reveals her affinity with raptors—oh! if she could have been born a goshawk), Mr. Collins (challenged to be a support to Lady Catherine in her bereavement, but joins her in advancing a romance), Mrs. Collins (a little giddy, but even more grateful to Lady Catherine), Georgiana (overwhelmed, but hoping to facilitate her brother’s romance) and Elizabeth (regretting her unforgivable rejection of Darcy, she now settles for an engagement with a painting). As the situation at Rosings turns into the stuff of nightmares, Jane (more spirited), Mr. Bingley (apologetic), and Mr. Bennet (still laughing at them all—and only sorry that he didn’t get to meet Lady Catherine) arrive.

This is an unabashed farce which requires unquestioning acceptance of many crazy, impossible and even improbable events. In exchange for that uncritical acceptance, it does deliver an entertaining story. Its main weakness, I would say, is in the attempt to combine the fantastical elements with a more traditional presentation of some aspects of the romantic relationships. The movement between the magical world (for example, where bereaved family members flout the conventions of society—without any consequences) and the mundane world (where Elizabeth thinks Darcy can’t ever love her again—and he thinks maybe she should marry his cousin since she won’t marry him) is frequently the point where the fantasy wears thin.

There are occasional mis-used words: “But I would not conscience the gossip” (countenance?) and several awkward sentences, but it rises above the usual standards for Jane Austen fan fiction. There are graphic sexual scenes; these occur largely in the final chapters when the three (!) newly married couples are described on their wedding nights. This section could easily be skipped by readers who do not want to read them, but there are other graphic incidents described relatively briefly scattered throughout the book.

Humorous and Murderous. Good fun.

Bravo to Linda Beutler on writing a humorous and murderous Pride and Prejudice variation that was never boring and made my neighbor inquire why I was laughing so much last night.

Neighbor: "Whatever were you doing?"
Me: "Reading."
Her: "A book?"
Me: "Yes, I was improving my mind with extensive reading."
Her: "Oh, I could hear the laughter over my TV."
Not being a reader at all, she didn't ask about the book but did want to talk about the strange reality tv show she had been watching.

Anywho... The action in this P&P what-if starts out just after the Hunsford proposal after Anne de Bourgh dies and all the major characters remain or return to Rosings Park as the deaths pile up. No angst here, as really, Ms. Beutler crafts the best off-ing of Mr. Collins and Lady Catherine in all of fan fiction and one gets to understand the private person of Miss de Bourgh through interspersed journal entries.

For those of you who were a little put out on Ms. Beutler's last book, Longbourne to London, expressing that the love scenes were a bit too breathtaking for you, you may read A Will of Iron happily, as the lovey dovey bits are at the end and are in line with the rest of the story: funny, discrete, and fast paced.

I re-read the story today to catch all of the little details. Thanks to Ms. Beutler for a fine book.

Oh, My Goodness - just when you think it is safe - don't drink the tea nor eat the cakes!

To use the author's own words, “And more apt and clever satires are rarely created.” “…amateurish and rather ghoulish production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream?” “A decidedly macabre lover’s lane”

At first I was horrified with the "serial" events, but then as I read on I was Rolling On the Floor Laughing. Do not think me unholy, with all the dire and deadly happenings but this was just so over the top. I read it over one day and, obviously, could not put it down.

As the book description tells you, events commence shortly after Darcy’s disastrous proposal at Hunsford. He and the Colonel have left but return as Anne has died. The doctor is called but Lady Catherine throws him out after hearing his pronouncement about Anne’s condition – the condition that led to her death? Others are called in or show up and the house is in an uproar. Mrs. Jenkinson is fired, the jewelry is counted and then the magistrate is involved. Lady C. will not bury Anne until the Archbishop is present to conduct the funeral service. And when Lady C. reads of a Mr. C., she takes action. Now who could Mr. C. be? Is it the man in the collar?

This tale has a spiraling of interconnected happenings. The POV goes from the reading of Anne’s journals (which have been spirited out of the house), at first by Charlotte and Elizabeth, to reading of both Elizabeth’s and Darcy’s yearnings, regrets and suppositions and back to the journals. There are two readings of Wills: point and counterpoint to each other. The characters of Bingley and Jane have more insight and loyalty than in canon. Their words show some wisdom as to observations they have made. And although not all the happenings are exactly as in canon we do have some pairings we expect and hope for but also a one new and surprising one.

We have most of the characters with whom we are familiar: Darcy, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Mr. Collins, Lady Catherine, Anne, Mrs. Jenkinson, Mr. Bennet, Sir Lucas and Maria, Georgiana, Col. Fitzwilliam and his family, Wickham and we hear a little of the other Bennets back in Longbourn. While most of the action is at Rosings, we spend some time at Longbourn and there are mentions of London.

There are descriptions of an intimate nature. Charlotte will not allow Elizabeth to read one journal due to its content and to Lizzy’s maidenly sensibilities. MA rating. I was very pleased with the outcome. And although I would not have wished for Anne’s demise I was intrigued to read of her observations of the people who came into her circle and of the way in which she sought and planned for her freedom. Her journals are presented sporadically throughout this novel. I do believe some readers may not accept her way of dealing with a mother like Lady C. but if/when you read of the history you may empathize with Anne’s plans and schemes.

The cover was apropos with which you will, I am sure, agree with if you decide to read this story. I do recommend such.

Should pay for itself many times over.

I am more used to using Haynes manuals but they don't have a manual for the BMW F30 series so luckily this one seems to be at least as good. It is hardback, has 1000 pages, has lots and lots of photos but is light on text, and the wiring diagrams take up the last 1/4 of the book. I was a bit wary of spending $100 on a manual when I'm used to paying $25 for a Haynes manual, but given the price of BMW servicing work I estimated it would pay for itself very quickly. It has already helped make my first oil change very simple by removing any guess work.

Valuable study resource; covers all domains

This book covers all the domains and provides detailed explanations for answers to the sample questions. Some of the materials that you can look up on the internet do not cover all the domains, nor do they always explain the reasons behind the answers. But this book does just that. The tips for preparing for the actual test are also very helpful. This is a valuable and effective resource to help you prepare for the exam. The practice test gives you a glimpse of what you to expect. I passed the exam on the first try.

The study guide for the TExES (178) Art EC-12 Exam is an effective way to prepare for your exam. It provides you with detailed yet concise overviews of the test material and then also gives you the option of testing yourself with the included practice test which you can use to keep track of how much you're really understanding. The greatest advantage the guide offers however are the test taking tips that range from making sure you practice to showing you how to overcome procrastination. You'll definitely find it valuable.

I am feeling so relieved at this point to have this product! I currently teach theatre, but I excel at painting. Knowing this, my principal has asked me to get certified to teach art over the summer so that we can have it next year. I am THRILLED about this, but terrified as well considering the fact that I have never in my life taken an art class. I know nothing of the actual techniques, history, movements, practitioners, etc. I flippantly took a couple of little practice tests to see where I stand on my own knowledge and did not fair well. I found that the "Secrets" study guide had some really good reviews from people who had already taken their exams and passed, so I decided to order it. When it came in the mail I was flooded with relief to see that the study guide contains all of this information (techniques, history, etc) condensed into quick chunks of relevant information that can be studied easily. Unlike the help you'll find in the TExES preparation manuals which only give you a HUGE list of textbooks to use. For starters, I can't afford to purchase all of them (I'm a teacher after all), and wouldn't know which ones to purchase if I wanted to get just a few, and for seconders, I'd need a couple of years to be able to study them all...in other words a degree in art! As soon as I've devoured this study guide a couple of times, I will return to the practice tests and expect to have MUCH better results! The people who put this manual together are obviously educators! They didn't just write a manual to try to make a financial profit, they wrote it using the best practices that an educator can in order to enable success for their students!
