Review
“Worms, infections, and tongue-replacing parasites abound in this graphic novel–and, once you've read it, in your subconscious as well.” — Tobias Carroll, Paste

"Jesse Jacobs creates beautiful art and his comics have a fantasy dreamlike aspect that is at once charming and horrifying." — Bryan Munn, Sequential

“The back-to-the-land arch doesn’t quite capture how sublimely strange Jacobs’ world is, but it gets to the message all the same: it’s the alienation from the land that makes the place horrible.” — David Berry, National Post

“Every page of this book could be torn out and framed. Seriously.” — Nadxi Nieto, Electric Literature

“…it’s the art that elevates it into exceptional territory; appropriately lush, splendidly intricate sequences — each page gorgeously psychedelic with much to pore over.” — Zainab Akhtar, Comics & Cola

“Jacobs’ book is not only a weird and whimsical visual treat, but an example of equally strong storytelling that holds its own, elevating it way above your typical ‘art comic.’” — Whit Taylor

“Part jungle adventure, part “psychedelic sojourn”, part biblical allegory, part gender study, part contemporary commentary, Safari Honeymoon is much more than the sum of its parts; it becomes its own thing by being unlike almost anything else.” — Daniel Elkin, Your Chicken Enemy

“Like the characters, the reader is pulled deeper and deeper into the terrain as Jacobs reveals more of this land’s hidden secrets. This makes for an especially enchanting read, even during the moments of grotesque horror.” — Oliver Sava, A.V. Club

“A demented exploration of unfamiliar wilderness, Jacobs’ absurdist horror story deftly comments on and sends up invasive species and Western explorers alike.” — Jeff VanderMeer, Electric Lit

“Presenting nature as a pitiless arena for survival of the fittest isn’t the most original of scenarios, but Jacobs’ presentation is wonderfully fresh and drolly humorous – a genuinely personal vision … [he] is a cartoonist gifted with tremendous imagination and one-of-a-kind visual acumen.” — Rob Kirby, The Comics Journal

“The work of an ingenious and fertile imagination this is a book where visual execution is unashamedly at the forefront of narrative drive in immersing the reader in a most intricately constructed realm of weirdness.” — Andy Oliver, Broken Frontier

“Safari Honeymoon is Summer 2014’s sleeper hit of acid.” — Greg Mannix, End of the Universe

“When reading Jesse Jacobs’ Safari Honeymoon the primary feeling is one of total immersion. It’s not just a graphic novel about a newlywed couple taking their honeymoon in a strange, dangerous environment, it’s a sensory experience that engulfs the reader in an intricately detailed biosystem of horrific parasites, alien foliage, and geometric spirits.” — Oliver Sava, A.V. Club

“In a recent interview, Jacobs said that if he weren’t a cartoonist he would probably have been a farmer. With Safari Honeymoon it seems that Jacobs has managed to be both at once, albeit a farmer in which the reader is the field to be planted.” — Jared Gardner, Ohio State University Professor of English and Film, Public Books

“Prime strange amusement.” — Ray Olson, Booklist

“In a recent interview, Jacobs said that if he weren’t a cartoonist he would probably have been a farmer. With Safari Honeymoon it seems that Jacobs has managed to be both at once, albeit a farmer in which the reader is the field to be planted.” — Jared Gardner, Public Books

“What at first seems like a familiar story trope — an older, rich lout and nubile, young wife go on safari led by a macho, knowledgeable guide — becomes under Jacobs’ hands something altogether strange, haunting, unexpected and altogether extraordinary.” — Chris Mautner, Comic Book Resources

“Pixelated robots, ropey organisms, swirling creatures of the cosmos, and even a bundle of intergalactic puppies feature in Jesse’s work, and we really cannot get enough of the meteoric illustrations.” — Madeleine Morley, It’s Nice That

“Safari Honeymoon, Jacobs’s new book, is narrower in scope [than By This Shall You Know Him], but in many ways even stranger and more impressive.” — Gabriel Winslow-Yost, The New York Review of Books

“Jacobs makes some of the most intricate, most fascinating, and oddest stories in comics today.” — Publishers Weekly

“The central motif here is parasitic transformation — one species crawling into another and overtaking its body — and, by its end, the book has shifted from an eccentric satire to a vision of union with monstrous nature.” — Douglas Wolk, The New York Times

“That the London, Ontario cartoonist cut his teeth working on TV’s Adventure Time makes sense, given the almost stop-motion quality of his critters throughout. But the artist’s concern with the squishy, tactile processes of mutation, infection, and evolution goes beyond what animation captures of life, and gestures instead toward the natural world in all its bewildering complexity.” — Sean Rogers, The Globe and Mail

“Jesse Jacobs’ last graphic novel—By This You Shall Know Him—is probably one of my top 5 favorite comics of the past half decade, making his latest—Safari Honeymoon—one of the books I’ve been most anticipating this year. His comics are weird, smart, beautifully designed and always surprising.” — Rich Barrett, mental_floss

“Part jungle adventure, part “psychedelic sojourn”, part biblical allegory, part gender study, part contemporary commentary, Safari Honeymoon is much more than the sum of its parts; it becomes its own thing by being unlike almost anything else.” — Daniel Elkin, Comics Bulletin

“Safari Honeymoon, as an exemplar of the next generation of comics storytelling, takes the medium to a different place, a place that may be best analogous to poetry.” — Jason Sacks, Comics Bulletin

“An exciting work for anyone interested in comics form and the medium’s possibilities, it rewards multiple readings and close analysis…for me, it’s one of the best graphic novels to come along in years. I couldn’t recommend it more enthusiastically.” — Ken Parille, The Comics Journal

“My favourite of Jesse Jacobs’ books, and another treasured addition to my Koyama Press shelf.” — Camilla Barboza, Orbital Comics

“It's not a matter of whether you'll get it or not; Jacobs has once again put together beautiful work that's worthwhile, and so unique that it will have you talking for quite some time. Seriously, you won't find anything else like it out this year.” — Ollie Ottoman, Ground Control Magazine

“The best thing about my reading of Safari Honeymoon is how frequently I was surprised. For instance, the relationship between the couple is portrayed sweetly rather than cynically; they seem a pair of mismatched souls working through elements common to all of our engagements with others that rarely get explored: choice, inexplicable desire, awe, gratitude, grace. I'll buy that ticket anytime it's offered.” — Tom Spurgeon, The Comics Reporter

“Jesse Jacobs’ work here accentuates everything that comics are great at, and serves as a perfect example of what the comics medium can really achieve that no other medium can in quite the same way.” — John Seven, Damnopedia

“Jacobs subverts jungle fantasy tropes by presenting just how precarious life is in the wild without the virtue of a total technological advantage and details that the only way out is to understand how the dominant species manages to adapt.” — Rob Clough, High-Low

“The writer and artist, Jesse Jacobs, has a history of the delightfully weird through his work on the cartoon Adventure Time, so didn’t we expect him to toy with our perceptions of reality? And if there hadn’t been strange creatures, comics would have felt left out.” — Hannah Means-Shannon, Bleeding Cool

Praise for By This Shall You Know Him

"An art comics creation myth, cosmic, disturbing, and beautifully rendered in ice-blue and contrasting purples, with a style that welds the lovely to the grotesque...By This Shall You Know Him is (further) proof that fantasy in comics need not be hollow, generic, or ingratiating. It can be troubling instead. An inspired comic!" — Author and academic, Charles Hatfield (Alternative Comics, and Hand of Fire: The Comics Art of Jack Kirby University Press of Mississippi, 2005 and 2012)

“I went in expecting a psychedelic vision quest, and I came out having experienced a stunning new creation myth. Intricate, upsetting, and fun.” — Jeremy Tinder, Boing Boing

Exporting the Entitled Class to a Beautifully Rendered Alien World
By EisNinE
Jesse Jacobs is fast establishing himself as one of the most gifted cartoonists to emerge in the last decade; he and fellow Canadian Michael Deforge are once again making the Great White North ground zero for a revolutionary shift in the aesthetics and storytelling of the comics avant garde. 'Safari Honeymoon' is the follow-up to Jacob's poignant and disturbing metaphysical fable, 'By This Shall You Know Him', once again released in a beautifully designed softcover edition by Koyama press.

'Safari Honeymoon' is a satire wrapped up in an entertaining science-fiction package. In the almost dream-like mode incorporating surrealist aspects that Jacobs executed so perfectly in BTSYKH, he introduces a newly married couple whose honeymoon takes them to another planet teeming with life, where they plan on hunting and killing indigenous species for sport. Their complete ineptitude constantly puts them in grave danger, but their long-suffering guide manages to keep them alive.

The attitude of entitlement displayed by the couple is analogous to British assumptions of 'divine right' and absolute superiority at the height of the empire, a time when the concept of the 'white man's burden' justified colonial exploitation and oppression. That entitlement might also apply to North American's culture of consumption, and the unspoken belief that the rest of the world is their playground. But eventually, the couple's notions of using an alien planet as their own private amusement park comes to an end, as the baffling array of organisms breach their bodies and minds, horrific parasites and symbiotes permanently altering their physiognomy.

As strong as his talents as a storyteller are, the artwork is f****** spectacular. His dense page layouts convey the superabundance of fascinating and nightmarish life-forms, which are initially acknowledged by the 'alien' honeymooners only as prey to be killed, amusing but disposable pets, or annoyances that inspire righteous indignation. Soon, they are forced to confront the fact that they are interlopers, and that they have dumbly stumbled into an environment where their status as members of the 'entitled class' entitles them to nothing. The heavily stylized art depicts a habitat with the imaginative richness of Bosch's 'Garden of Earthly Delights' and 'The Temptations of St. Anthony'; particularly the left-to-right 'read' of the former, as strange beauty gives way to an ominous, decadent Luxuria, and then the abrupt, nightmarish celebration of eternal suffering that is Hell. This Adam and Eve bring their culture of mindless consumption with them, but end up breached and corrupted, unwittingly joining the food chain as mid-level prey/predators.

Though I doubt any artist likes being compared to their peers, Jacobs' style is reminiscent to that of DeForge, but still very much his own. While Matt Brinkman, Brian Chippendale and the now defunct Fort Thunder/Highwater scene are a more obvious inspiration than Canadian greats like Seth and Chester Brown, 'Suckle'-'Crumple'-'Ripple' cartoonist-turned-gallery artist Dave Cooper might have informed Jacobs' aesthetics (i.e. Cooper's obsession with hyper-sexualized alien flora and fauna, as evidenced in the 'Tryptych' and 'Dan & Larry'). As a fan of European comics, the clean, carefully considered linework reminds me of Killoffer, while the odd and sometimes grotesque tendencies recall Stephane Blanquet and Brit Tom Gauld. Possible American influences include Archer Prewitt, Jordan Crane, and Sammy Harkham. Who his true influences are, I have no idea, a testament to his originality and artistic brilliance, a truly visionary talent. (95/100)

A unique and entertaining vision in the comic book world
By piloo
Jesse Jacobs has his own flavor. It's smooth and entertaining but quite original in the visual storytelling world. Considering this is "alternative cartooning" or at least non-traditional, Jesse goes about telling a story that doesn't feel overtly agenda driven or pretentiously complex even though there seems to be an underlying message as it frames a funny outlook of the pettiness of humanity against the ignorance of our environment. The message is more subtle than it might sound and is told in a unique visual style. Despite the goal this story may have, the design is engaging, quirky and diverting so that you often forget that there might by a bigger principle behind the narrative as you have so much fun getting lost in the details. But regarding what I've just said I don't know if I would say this story is an outright environmental story. It's too surreal to define it quite so narrowly, but it does seem to relate a type of harmony with nature, but also recognizing a certain sense of the requirements of life and with a subtle humor to it all.

The visual style vaguely reminds me of Herge's Tin Tin, but Jacobs has a more contemporary graphic style and an eye for compositional settings and background environments. Visually alone this story is fun to look at with interesting use of geometry, shape, and especially funky textures. The images could almost tell the story by themselves, but the dialogue perhaps keeps the flow more intuitive and gives insight.

This is alternative cartooning to be sure, but instead of taking the common "alternative" road of bombarding you with counter culture-centric quibbles, Jacobs brings you in with a zen-like appeal. I thoroughly enjoyed this story and I'm interested to see more of Jesse's work in the future.

Perfect short comic book.
By Michelle D.
This was fantastic. The story was weird but had a certain flow to it, and the drawings were tight and hilarious and inventive. I caught myself more than once thinking, "I wish I thought of that, or what a great idea for a creature!" The quality of the paper was nice too, and the cover felt durable enough that I could take it with me without accidentally destroying it. I can't remember where the recommendation came from, it might have been from one of the major graphic novel publishing companies, but I'm glad I followed up and purchased this. Highly recommend for anyone's collection.

Probably the best book out there
By Eddard S.
Solid. Probably the best book out there.

It won't get super detailed and can sometimes be too simple. Probably M3/M4 or early residency level.

Probably not as good as Pocket Med but better than the other pocket books from this series (as a note, pocket primary care is also very good and covers PC complaints better than this book). This is pure EM.

Excellent book though. I'm being critical here - it's probably the best EM book for the levels I talked about. It's all bullets so you kind of need to know what you're reading about to make sense of it. It's not a primary learning source. It's to jog your memory. Bullets.

Helpful for PA Emergency Medicine Rotation
By Amazon Customer
This was an excellent reference for my Emergency Medicine rotation. I was able to quickly get the information I needed based on the chief complaint including important historical information, differential diagnosis, and recommended labs/imaging. There is also a small section on pediatric emergencies and common chief complaints which was helpful since I have limited experience with pediatrics.

In this concluding volume of The Myth of the Machine, Mumford brings to a head his radical revisions of the stale popular conceptions of human and technological progress. vital books
By Derrick Jensen
Lewis Mumford was one of the 20th century's most important philosophers, and the two-volume set Myth of the Machine (Volume 1 is Technics and Human Development; and Volume 2 is The Pentagon of Power) are probably his most important books: the summation of his life's work. In writing as elegant as it is clear, Mumford makes plain the death urge that has always underlain civilization, which Mumford calls "the machine," and later "the megamachine." This is a social structure organized not around any organic human needs, but around the "needs" of the machines that have come to characterize and control our lives. These are crucial, incisive, devastating books. I cannot praise them highly enough.

Reading this several decades after it was written (on the recommendation of a friend) provides some rear view mirror insight into utopian visions (or dystopian predictions) that did not pan out as expected.

Its worth reading, if only to be reminded of the above.

Rage Against the Mega-Machine
By Sean, seanbrasil@lycos.com
Nobody writes like this anymore. I hadn't expected the eminent urban historian to write such a brilliant paranoiac tract against the System and Established Order. Although often redundant, Mumford makes a heroic attempt at explaining the current problems of our times, with roots in the Middle Ages, and perhaps even the Age of the Pyramids. He echoes contempories like Herbert Marcuse, Erich Fromm and Marshall McLuhan, but instead of taking a Marxist, psychological or media perspective, he takes the more general view of an urbanist. The arguments are quite paralell, although considerably more holistic at times. One recognizes critiques that were earlier or later articulated by not only Marxists, but also feminists, environmentalists, and anti-Imperialists. There are also anticipations of the New Age Movement! (See Fitjof Capra's "the Turning Point.")In short, this massive volume impressively combines much historical and cultural material in its critique of Modern Western Civilization. Although the tone of the book is quite bleak -- we would all appear to be trapped in this Megamachine, the High Technology of the Power Elites -- one also senses a hope towards last chapters that an alternative is possible. He seems to suggest a New Age style withdrawal, rather than any kind of organized resistance. Draw your own conclusions.

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Safely returned from his perilous stint among Northmen, 12-year-old Jack reflects, "That's the nature of adventures. . . . They're nasty while they're happening and only fun later." For readers, though, there's satisfaction in both the nasty and the fun, and this sequel to The Sea of Trolls (2004) offers full measures of both. After Jack learns that his often-bratty little sis is a changeling (and that his real sister likely dwells with hobgoblins), a misguided exorcism results in Lucy's disappearance. Then the young bard must descend into the out-of-time Land of the Silver Apples to retrieve both of his lost siblings. In that richly imagined realm, surprises include a reunion with shield-maiden Thorgil as well as creatures whose appearances deceive—shape-shifting knuckers; hideous yet likable hobgoblins; and lovely, soulless elves, whose inability to grow or age tinges their existence with tragedy. Occasionally, one wishes for a greater range of emotional tone to the predicaments, which plunge Jack into deep despair perhaps too consistently, but Farmer beautifully balances pell-mell action and quieter thematic points, especially the drawbacks of immortality and the wild tangle of Christian and pagan traditions in eighth-century Britain. Like the druidic life force Jack taps, this hearty adventure, as personal as it is epic, will cradle readers in the "hollow of its hand." Mattson, Jennifer

Review
"Jack, Pega, and Thorgil prove strong and capable in ways they themselves never suspected, and readers will look forward to the final installment." -- "Kirkus Reviews", Starred Review

So many myths!
By Elizabeth M. Cullen
More adventures with Jack and The Bard, Dragon Tongue. A few old friends, some new ones, ancient Celtic and Nordic gods mixed with early Christian beliefs, elves, and some magical creatures along with Jack's growing sense of responsibility for his own responses add up to great suspense and realizations. Never a boring scene.

THE LAND OF THE SILVER APPLES is less humorous and more fanciful than its predecessor
By KidsReads
Jack is an apprentice bard who is recently returned to his village after his adventures as a Viking captive. His village, having endured a difficult year, has decided to participate in a need-fire ceremony. All the fires in the village are extinguished and then restarted with new flame kindled from two logs rubbed against each other. This is done so that the misfortunes of the past do not linger into the new year.

The ceremony goes awry when Jack's sister Lucy introduces a metal necklace into the ritual. Metal, the village's Bard warns, cannot be used in these kinds of ceremonies because one can never tell where it's been. If metal has been used as a weapon or for some other evil purpose, it perverts the life force. Believing Lucy has been possessed by an evil spirit, a group of villagers takes her to the nearby Saint Fillian's well, which is believed to cure people of possession.

What they find there shocks and horrifies Jack, who inadvertently offends the spirit of the place. He accidentally causes an earthquake and all the water in the surrounding area to disappear. It is finally decided that Jack and the other young companions --- Lucy; Pega, a freed slave so ugly people believe she is cursed; and Brutus, a charismatic descendent of Lancelot -- should travel the Hollow Road to the realm of the elves and request the water's return.

Children, the Bard explains, are young enough to resist the lure of elves. "'It's a curious thing, but this is one area where children are stronger than adults,'" he says. '"They aren't as easily taken in by illusions, and elves above all else, are masters of illusion.'"

THE LAND OF THE SILVER APPLES is not the first book to set children on a perilous journey underground. The companions entertain themselves, Tolkien-style, with riddles, stories and songs. Like the children in C.S. Lewis's subterranean adventure THE SILVER CHAIR, they must bolster their memories of the world above ground to survive in a place without sun. Their descent into darkness brings them into the realm of all manner of magical creatures. In addition to the elves, there are the knuckers, kelpies, hobgoblins and the mysterious yarthkins. They also encounter several other humans along the Hollow Road, including the severe yet pious Father Severus, and Thorgil, the shield maiden from THE SEA OF TROLLS who is separated from the rest of her raiding party.

The success of Harry Potter has created a renaissance in children's fantasy. Faerie has been an especially popular theme often featuring stories about romances between worlds. Farmer sticks with the medieval construct of elves as fallen angels, not damned to hell, but without souls. As the beings who would not choose sides in Lucifer's war with Heaven, they must earn their souls to get another chance at paradise. Their immortality and lack of compassion make them cruel and fickle beings. They are vain, easily bored and difficult to please.

Farmer uses the conflict with the elves to explore different cosmologies. Jack comes from a druidic-pagan tradition and is dedicated to the life force. Thorgil is the sole representative of the Norse viewpoint in this book, with its emphasis on bravery and infamy. They are joined by Father Severus, a severe but well-meaning monk, who is a devout Christian. Much of the humor here comes from the different characters responding to situations according to their faith. It is also notable that they must use the strengths of all their different faiths to work together and overcome challenges. Jack's approach is primarily intuitive, Thorgil's unflinchingly courageous, and Father Severus introduces an element of discipline that the children need to complete their mission.

THE LAND OF THE SILVER APPLES is less humorous and more fanciful than its predecessor. It easily can be read as a stand-alone title, but readers of the first book will miss Olaf One-Brow, the fierce and vigorous Northman from THE SEA OF TROLLS. What transpires underground involves several great sacrifices. While the companions escape relatively unscathed, it is certain that a great shift in their world is taking place, one that will be revealed in the final book in the series, THE ISLANDS OF THE BLESSED, expected out in 2009.

Nancy Farmer is a phenomenal author for young people. Her work has an ambitious reach far beyond what many adults would expect children to grasp. While she can be read and appreciated by fans of traditional fantasy, her work has a breadth and depth that goes far beyond most invented worlds into the history of human belief. Like her previous book in the series, Farmer put extensive research into THE LAND OF THE SILVER APPLES and includes a bibliography at the end of the book. Her work focuses on an interfaith or intercultural approach to conflict. It features many layers of ambiguous powers working together to attain the most harmonious results. At a time when the newspapers contain many religious and ethnic conflicts, work like Farmer's is essential to understanding our histories, imagining new realities and engaging with the inner workings of the human heart.

The rare, wonderful middle book.
By C. Mangone
I love this woman. I love every single thing she's written, albeit some more than others, so I am admittedly very biased when it comes to her works.

The book takes place after The Sea of Trolls when, among other things, Jack's sister Lucy is taken by elves and he has to travel underground to their lands to get her back.

The Land of the Silver Apples is such a good middle book. The story moves along at a great pace, and not once did I want to put it down. She has a delicate touch with the religious issues inherent in writing in this time period (Christian vs. Druidic vs. Nordic), and writes each in such a way that none of them are put down. It's quite lovely to not have to put up with an author hammering their beliefs down my throat.

I also adored her take on elves. I've never seen anything like it. Very refreshing and original, things quite lacking in the general portrayal of elves.

All her vivid, distinct characters are what really what give this book it's umph, though. Jack has matured, though he still has a lot of growing up to do, and seeing the great variety of characters through is alternately wise, sympathetic, jealous, and juvenile-ly hateful perspectives is just wonderful. A great amount of the cast from the Sea of Trolls returns, and the new additions to the cast are fully-fleshed and original.

The only disappointment I had was that there wasn't a greater role for the Picts. Or, rather, the Pictish Beast. ...it just seemed odd that one of the chapter headers was a Pictish Beast, it's mentioned once in a chapter, it's in the glossary, but... there's nothing else on it. Well, I guess it's such an indistinct beastie that I can say I wouldn't have wanted to tackle it myself.

All in all, another amazing book from an amazing author. I'm waiting on the edge of my seat for the next book!
