You liked the movie? You will love this artbook

The first thing to be indicated with Marvel's book Guardians of the Galaxy: The Art of the Movie, it is first one of the collection Art of Marvel movie has to exceed 300 pages. Indeed the precedent made 272 pages and this one makes 336! On the other hand, I expected a bigger artbook, because it has the same thickness as other one having fewer pages. The cause in it? And well the pages of this artbook are a hair finer, but feel reassured it is all the same good quality.

Other importing point, the artbook is squeezed well in the case and thus it does not fall when we tilt it a little. It was one of the problems cleaning the previous cases of the collection Art of Marvel movie. Well it is very beautiful, but the contents of the artbook in all this, that gives what.

And well it is because of the happiness my dear friend! Many illustrations full page, and especially height of artworks everything in colors on the research for all the protagonists of the movie and for lands. We can blame, on the other hand, that the illustrations are for a dark great majority, because we do not see very certain details and it is a real pity.

For the contents, everything is, and it is always one treats to see the various researches) for all the characters at the level of their physical appearance and their style. We resume what makes the success of books on movies marvel: we begin with a history of the comics and the explanation of the choice of the history, then we resume the chronology of the whole movie (attention on spoilers for those who would want to look at the book before seeing )

Ah yes, a small disappointment: I thought of credit note at least about ten page on the store of collectors showing us not bad object of its collection, which are many of the winks of eye with regard to other universe of comics marvel. Except us let us have that 3 pages with almost nothing.

To end, I shall like making a precision further to some reproaches on Marvel's book Guardians of the Galaxy: The Art of the Movie, whom I was able to read on certain site, it is not a making of of the movie, thus no photos of wings or interviews of the actors. This is an artbook: a book on the artistic creation of the movie.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Art Book

If you have seen any of the other Marvel Art of books, then you'll know what to expect, fantastic presentation and quality. The slip case is nice and shiny, the hardcover book is thick and wide so the full color pictures aren't upscaled and look clean and sharp (though unfortunately a few pictures are poorly laid out across 2 pages and sink into the binding of the spine rendering them almost unviewable). There is a great forward by director James Gunn, 9 chapters (with great concept art of omitted characters like Nova, and storyboards for scenes like the Prison Break, weapons and character design and marketing campaign) and more.

There are full splash pages of fantastic model work, skin textures, vehicle designs, all with minimal text. The Slipcase is the "A" film poster (pictured above) with Peter Quill, Groot and Rocket on the front, and Drax and Gamora on the back. The actual book cover is a great piece of concept art with more of a matte finish as opposed to the glossy slipcase finish. Both are top notch, the book fits snug in the slipcase but not too tight that it's difficult to get out. Just an overall awesome presentation. Keep in mind, this is an art book, not a behind the scenes book about the making of the film. There aren't pictures of the actors in costume, or a bunch of still shots from the film, it's preliminary art and concept art. It is, after all, an art book.

Some people may find issues with the lack of text, or others may complain that there is too much text. There's about a paragraph of text on every page and it's impossible to please everyone. I became a huge Guardians of the Galaxy fan after watching the film opening weekend and have been trying to get my hands on any and everything Guardians related. If you loved the movie (and who didn't, it was freakin' awesome) then this book is a must. It's great to see what Star-Lord could have looked like, the design changes his ship the Milano (named after Pete Quill's childhood crush Alyssa Milano, which is hilarious) went through and what inspired its look. For $40, you get a fantastic art book with an immaculate presentation. This comes FULLY APPROVED.

Almost absurdly nice

SHORT VERSION: This book gets almost everything right. It shows design evolution for characters, costumes, and vehicles, pre-viz "atmosphere" development for settings, and it has lots of interesting insights from the artists without overwhelming you with text. Plus some storyboards and some VFX frames for comparison. And the physical book and slipcase are very solid and nicely made. If you're interested enough to be reading this, just get it already.

LONG VERSION: My frame of reference for movie art books was established by the Star Wars "Art of" series. The original trilogy art books were very heavily weighted toward design evolution, showing how AT-ATs and cloud cars and so on changed from initial conception to final product. They also had some matte paintings, especially for ESB, and some storyboards, mostly for space battle and speeder bike sequences in ANH and ROTJ. But almost nothing in way of explanation in terms of how and why artistic decisions were made.

The prequel trilogy art books started providing more explanation from the artists about how and why they made their design choices. The TPM book had a lot of design evolution and many lovely concept paintings. For AOTC, digital paintings used in pre-viz take up a lot more of the book, so consequently you get less in terms of design evolution. By the ROTS book, the design evolution element is barely represented at all; pre-viz paintings take up almost the entire book.

The GOTG book hits a really nice balance among all of the elements one might want in an "Art of" book: lots of design evolution, lots of pre-viz paintings (but a useful variety, not just three dozen different views of Geonosis), and over all of it, lots of explanations from the artists and creators about why they did what they did. This turns the art for each character and vehicle from a gallery into a narrative: here's what worked, here's what didn't, here's why certain things ended up on screen.

To pick just one example, I hadn't thought about how many ways there were to make Groot creepy. But the Groot that ended up on screen is surrounded by an uncanny valley (maybe an uncanny moat?) of horrible alterna-Groots: wooden skeleton Groot, asymmetrical pseudo-Ent that looks like it's falling apart, plant demon Groot that just stepped out of some jungle Hades, and so on. There must be a dozen or so possible Groots in the book, and except for the Groot we know and love, they're all one flavor or another of nightmare fuel.

Same thing for pretty much every other character in the book. And some nice design evolution stuff for the vehicles, too, and for locations like Morag, Xandar, and my favorite, Knowhere.

Some other nice touches: Many of the characters and vehicles in the book has a VFX frame from the actual movie for comprison. Practically every piece of art in the book has the artist's name at the bottom (unobtrusively) so you know who did what. Chris Foss gets a nice shout-out in the Forward, and the book includes some of his concept art for the movie--yes, he worked on the film! A few pages of cool storyboards by David Krentz show the visual development of the prison escape sequence.

I assume if you're interested in the book you must have liked the movie, and you're coming to the book in the hope that it will take you deeper into how the movie came to be. That hope will be rewarded. The cumulative effect of all of the art and all of the artists' thoughts about the art is to make the book into a sort of manifesto for doing visual sci-fi that isn't hostage to any one thread of influence. As James Gunn writes in the Forward: "Guardians of the Galaxy would be about color, and life. In-you-face, over-the-top, unrepentant COLOR. We would rescue the aesthetics of pulpy science fiction films from the fifties and sixties--films like Forbidden Planet, Fantastic Voyage, Barbarella--while simultaneously retaining the grittiness and workaday reality of later films."

Finally, the book itself is really well done as a physical object, almost luxurious in the quality of its production. It would be a nice piece of kit even without the slipcase. With its big wide pages, heavy glossy paper, rock-solid cover, and sewn binding, it was clearly meant to be enjoyed and pored over and shared. My 9-year-old and I turned every page and found wonders all the way through. Highly recommended.

About the Author
Born in 1974 in Nantes, France, Gerald grew up in nine different cities around the land of cheese. He graduated from the National School of Applied Art (also called Olivier de Serres) in 1998. Gerald's creativity blossomed at a web design company, an event studio, a video-games studio, and then several animations studios. Aside from illustration, Gerald has many other interests, including managing the French Comics Artists association "Rendez-Vous" (which published its first book at Akileos publishing in 2009), or co-leading with the Japanese Artist Daisuke Tsutsumi the artistic and charity project "Sketchtravel," a real sketchbook shared by 70 illustrators from all around the world.

When Trisha Speed Shaskan was a girl, she wanted to become a superhero. Her mother gave her a Wonder Woman costume. Her dad crafted her a tiara and bracelets out of metal to match. Trisha imagined she could fight evil, fly an invisible airplane, and get anyone to tell the truth. While she didn’t grow up to be Wonder Woman, she still uses her imagination to write stories and to teach creative writing. Trisha has taught creative writing to children and adults for thirteen years. She has published 26 books for children, and more are forthcoming. She has an MFA in creative writing from Minnesota State University, Mankato. Trisha currently lives in Minneapolis with her husband, Stephen, and their cat, Eartha, named after Eartha Kitt, famous for her role as Catwoman.

Honestly, this book was rotten!

I was really excited when I saw this book. I love it when an author takes a popular tale and turns it on it's end, usually with a healthy helping of snark.

The story begins with the wolf telling us he is a vegetarian (he especially loves apples) and that we should not judge him for the whole Red Riding Hood incident. He goes on to explain how he was really hungry the day he encountered Red Riding Hood....really hungry.

The next several pages show us Red Riding Hood and Granny looking like big juicy apples, vainly admiring themselves in every available reflective surface. The vegetarian Wolf justifies eating them because they are "rotten" and look like apples. I think there is supposed to be a lesson in there, but all I could find was that Red was asking for it.

My verdict: Skip it!

Ultimate German Beginner-Intermediate (Coursebook)

I must start off by saying that I have never had a German class, neither at any formal institution nor with a tutor, friend, or the like. Therefore, I cannot judge this text against any formal course of German.
But, I am very interested in learning languages, and have used many textbooks in the past, even some made for use in a school environment. So, I feel that I can give a fairly good critique of this book.
Out of any foreign language textbook I have used, I find that this book is, if not THE best, one of the best I have had the experience of learning a language with. I am self-taught in all of the languages I have been learning, except for three years of Spanish I took in school. Therefore, I know that textbooks need to have certain aspects to be able to be used sufficiently for self-study, and this book has them.
Although there is no CD, many resources can be found online for the pronunciation of German, and the pronunciation notes in the beginning of the book, I find, are very good ones. Therefore, I do not feel that pronunciation should be much of a struggle to learn.
I very much like the structure of the chapters in this book, and find that it works very well for learners. Each chapter begins with a Dialogue or two, and their translation(s). These are not too difficult and not too long or too short, and they are written to be able to be mostly understood based on knowledge from previous chapters. Following the Dialogue, there is a section for Grammar and Structure, which teaches material a reader has not yet learned from a previous chapter. There are then vocabulary lists and exercises, to reinforce the material. By the end of a chapter, a reader should be able to understand the dialogue, or at least almost all of it.
The book also provides review quizzes after every ten chapters, as well as practice readings written like articles one might see in the news or on a blog, et cetera.
Overall, I find that this book is a very good introduction to the German language for anyone interested, whether a student, or just a casual learner such as myself.

Excellent for a German "over-the-counter" course!

The best way to learn german is by living in a German-speaking country. If you can't do that, this course will take you a long way toward proficiency in German. BUT, I would say that the accompanying CD's are a must for the novice. I took 4 years in college, and still read German newspapers on line, but wanted something to brush up. I have used several language courses (Barron's, Pimsleur, Tell Me More, etc.) I would rank this one in the top 2. Somehow, they strike a good balance of natural conversation exposure, phrase-learning, useful vocabulary, grammar, and culture tips. They pack more into their course than most. As far as how advanced you can go with Ultimate German, they do a good job there, too. Normally, passive voice, subjunctive, and other more difficult grammar structures are either not covered by other language courses, or given shallow coverage. The Ultimate German advanced book, and even the beginner-intermediate levels cover these, and in a very natural way...much earlier on than other courses. My library had both sets. I ripped the CD's (legal) and burned them onto discs, as well as put them on my MP3. I then bought just the book on Amazon. That way, I got a great course for pennies on the dollar. I can't imagine that the "new complete course" can do much better, so I went with this last version before they changed over. Glad I did. Viel vergnügen!

It tottaly worth the price

I already read the "The Everything Learning German" (more than twice...) by Ed Swick and I would say that the Swick's book is more didactic and easy to read for a truly beginner, even though I'm still in lesson 11 in the "Ultimate German". There are some points that are said in the "Ultimate German" book that Swick's doesn't covers and vice-versa and appears also that the Swick's is more updated. But anyway, the book is a good "next-step" and a cheap one, you would spend some months to fully study it.

On the other hand, if you have worked and/or are working in these areas, and you want a cohesive presentation of the fundamentals, a development of important theory and techniques, a discussion of the salient results with emphasis on the physical aspects, and a presentation of modern thinking in these areas, then this book is also for you. In other words, this book is designed for two roles: 1) as an effective classroom text that can be used with ease by the instructor, and understood with ease by the student; and 2) as a viable, professional working tool for engineers, scientists, and managers who have any contact in their jobs with hypersonic and/or high-temperature flow. Because of its success, most of the first edition has been carried over to the second edition with the addition of much new material.

This second Edition has updated figures and data to compliment the presentation and discussion of the fundamentals. New to this edition are some educational tools that the author has found successful in previous books, namely the inclusion of: (1) previews of each chapter written in plain language to inform the reader why it is important to read and understand the material in the chapter, to highlight the important aspects , and to whip up the reader’s passion to consume the chapter; (2) design examples scattered throughout the book to illustrate the application of the fundamentals to the design of hypersonic vehicles and ground test facilities; and (3) roadmaps at the beginning of each chapter to guide the reader comfortably through the material. New subjects discussed in the Second Edition include shock-shock interactions, hypersonic waveriders, and aspects of hypersonic propulsion devices, always in light of the fundamentals emphasized in the main part of the book.

About the Author
Dr. John Anderson, Jr. received his Ph.D. in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering in 1966 from the Ohio State University. Dr. Anderson served as professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Maryland where he became the Glenn L. Martin Distinguished Professor for Education in Aerospace Engineering. He is an Honorary Fellow of AIAA and a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society. Among his numerous accomplishments, he was awarded the AIAA Pendray Aerospace Literature Award ""for writing textbooks in aerospace engineering which have received worldwide acclaim."" In 1999 he retired from the University of Maryland and was appointed Professor Emeritus. He is currently the Curator for Aerodynamics at the National Air and Space Museum.

Exciting introduction

This is my favorite Anderson text, next to Modern Compressible Flow and Computational Fluid Dynamics. Both are 5 star texts.

There are a surprising amount of typos in the text. Just be careful. I found them because I parsed the text carefully during my outlines of the chapter material. You find about 1-2 typos per chapter.

Looking at it in front of me, it's a beast. I did not formally cover the first 445 pages of Hypersonics but I did cover the last half of the book while studying High-Temperature Gas Dynamics. The high-temp sections offer a very good roadmap for learning. All of the topics are brought together very well during this portion of the text.

The information on Hypersonics appeared exhaustive. If it is recommended for hypersonics, I would get it. It covers inviscid AND viscous hypersonic flow in parts 1 and 2. Part 3 is high-temp. This is an excellent INTRODUCTORY text for graduate level students. The author does recommend many texts that will allow the reader to delve further into the subject matter.
