About the Author
Chad Elkins has his own CPA practice in Chicago, and before that had experience working for the U.S. Tax Court and the Tax Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. He has an MBA from the University of Notre Dame, and passed all parts of the CPA exam the first time he took it with an almost perfect score. Tim Elkins, Chad's Father, has his own CPA practice in Texas, which he started after retiring from the Inspector General's Office of the U.S. Agency for International Development. Before retiring from government service, he was assigned to a special team that audited the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).

About the Author

Richard Enbody is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Michigan State University. Since joining the faculty in 1987, he has served as Acting Chair of the Department, Associate Chair, and as Director of the Computer Engineering Undergraduate Program.

Enbody received his B.A. in Mathematics from Carleton College in 1976, and spent six years teaching high school mathematics in Vermont and New Hampshire. He earned his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Minnesota.

Richard's research interests are in computer security, computer architecture, web-based distance education and parallel processing, especially the application of parallel processing to computational science problems. He has two patents pending on hardware buffer-overflow protection which will prevent most computer worms and viruses.

In 1998 Richard pioneered a CS1 course (first course in Computer Science) over the World Wide Web using RealVideo synchronized with PowerPoint. Students from as far away as Russia and Korea enrolled in the course.

When not teaching, Richard plays hockey, squash, canoes, backpacks, as well as a host of family activities.

Bill Punch is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Michigan State University as well as the director of Michigan State's High Performance Computing Center.

Punch is co-director of the Genetic Algorithms Research and Applications Group or GARAGe. His main interests are genetic algorithms and genetic programming, including theoretical issues (parallel GA/GP) and application issues (design, layout, scheduling, etc.). He also has conducted active research in data mining, focusing on the use of ontologies such as WordNet and Wikipedia for text search.

Exactly what I needed

This book is actually very nice. I'm not a first-time programmer (but I'm definitely not experienced with Python language) and this book is very easy to understand and read. I bought this for my Intro Programming class at college, but my class is all online so you definitely don't need to be in college to use this book. It can be used by anyone willing to try to learn some basic code on their own! My copy did come with a MyProgrammingLab access (NOTE: I bought this NEW directly from Amazon, beware of other sellers!), which was a relief because one small part of me was doubtful. Other than that, the book is nicely sized, although it is paperback so it just required a bit more care than a hardback book. Overall, this book is exactly what I needed for my class!

I use this book for Programming 1 at University and I have found it a very helpful resource with easy to understand information on how to use Python. As a side I have very little previous programming experience, so the book was clearly written for people with little to no background.

Inman, Lyn Hejinian, Myung Mi Kim, and the Language poets; Susan Howe's "Pierce-Arrow," which he submits to semiotic analysis; and the innovations of Craig Dworkin and the conceptualists. Revitalizing what many consider to be a staid rhetorical trope, Golston positions allegory as a creative catalyst behind American poetry's postwar avant-garde achievements.

This book examines NATO’s transition from a Cold War mutual defence organization into a global alliance, and puts the recent crisis over the Afghanistan mission in the context of long-standing debates over out-of-area interventions.

Originally, NATO bound the western allies together for the purposes of mutual defence as defined by Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which declared that an attack on the territory of one ally was to be considered an attack on them all. However, Article 4 of the Treaty invites the allies to consult with each other on a less formal basis whenever their 'territorial integrity, political independence, or security' was threatened, without the automatic commitment to a shared response. During the Cold War, the allies consulted both formally and informally on issues beyond mutual defence in debates that were, more often than not, extremely contentious. After the Cold War, these out-of-area missions became the primary focus of NATO’s military missions. The allies had to debate the scope of co-operation for every mission they considered undertaking collectively. This book argues that NATO’s identity has changed from a Cold War mutual defence organization to a global alliance in the course of debates over how to respond to the changing circumstances of its security environment.

Excellent background for non-English major teaching a writing-intensive course.

Grammar books are ok, but don't provide help in the context of graduate-level academic and scientific writing. This is one of several University of Michigan resources that are designed to address academic writing. My students are multilingual graduate students who struggle with formal writing assignment. Grammar Choices helps me understand complicated concepts and be able to teach them effectively.
