From Booklist
The Gardners proclaim this to be a "stand-alone interactive guide," but it will appeal most to fans of their Motley Fool Investment Guide (1996) or their just-released You Have More Than You Think: The Motley Fool Guide to Investing What You Have (1998). In their trademarked (literally!) Foolish style, these two brothers provide the charts, graphs, questionnaires, and pop quizzes necessary to help people assess their own financial status, set goals, and develop a plan and method to reach those goals. The Gardners help make investment principles clear and are very effective in reaching those who may be put off by more traditional financial planning guides. Although their advice is quite sound, they serve it up irreverently and make it clear that they do not take themselves too seriously. David Rouse

Review
The Wall Street Journal Humorous and savvy.

Go from a 'fool" to a "Fool"
By Brent Senske
I consider reading about investing about as dull a subject as I could imagine. This book has me looking for more. An absolute breeze to read and understand. I actually knew the answer to a question asked on TV's "Win Ben Steins Money" because of this book. Forget about winning money, after reading this you'll be excited about investing it!!

geat primer for beginner and more experienced
By A Customer
I have read many investment books and this book has the clearest explanation of understanding a companies annual report. It shows you the formulas to apply to the report to determine if the company may be having problems or ready to really go!
Many examples to make sure that you are getting it. Loved this book.

Great supplement to Investors Guide.
By T. Geoghegan
After reading TMF Investors Guide, I decided to give the workbook a try. It was worth the look. It guides you through all of the techniques described in the Investors Guide. With pencil and calculator in hand, I went through the entire workbook and now really have a clear picture of my own financial situation and how "foolish" investing will work for me. This book helps to clear up some of the hazy concepts that you might read about in other Motley Fool publications (ie. Foolish 4 and other Dow techniques). I say this is a great book to go through after reading the Motley Fool Investors Guide. It contains the same irreverent humor and lively writng and really reinforces everything the Gardners teach.

Mergers, Merger Control, and Remedies: A Retrospective Analysis of U.S. Policy (MIT Press), by John Kwoka

In recent decades, antitrust investigations and cases targeting mergers -- including those involving Google, Ticketmaster, and much of the domestic airline industry -- have reshaped industries and changed business practices profoundly. And yet there has been a relative dearth of detailed evaluations of the effects of mergers and the effectiveness of merger policy. In this book, John Kwoka, a noted authority on industrial organization, examines all reliable empirical studies of the effect of specific mergers and develops entirely new information about the policies and remedies of antitrust agencies regarding these mergers. Combined with data on outcomes, this policy information enables analysis of, and creates new insights into, mergers, merger policies, and the effectiveness of remedies in preventing anticompetitive outcomes.

After an overview of mergers, merger policy, and a common approach to merger analysis, Kwoka offers a detailed analysis of the studied mergers, relevant policies, and chosen remedies. Kwoka finds, first and foremost, that most of the studied mergers resulted in competitive harm, usually in the form of higher product prices but also with respect to various non-price outcomes. Other important findings include the fact that joint ventures and code sharing arrangements do not result in such harm and that policies intended to remedy mergers -- especially conduct remedies -- are not generally effective in restraining price increases. The book's uniquely comprehensive analysis advances our understanding of merger decisions and policies, suggests policy improvements for competition agencies and remedies, and points the way to future research.

Review

Mergers, Merger Control, and Remedies is foremost an economics book. But it has a high readability factor for non-economist antitrust practitioners and policy makers. This derives largely from Kwoka's seamless and intuitive linking of empirics, to valuable insight into observed agency outcomes, to implications for merger policy. As a result, the book is a must-read for economists, lawyers, institutional experts, and policy makers.

(Diana L. Moss The American Antitrust Institute)

This first-ever comprehensive review of the retrospective studies of mergers both supports and challenges U.S. antitrust enforcers. Kwoka finds that opposition to mergers is usually justified, but that enforcers clear too many harmful mergers and often impose inadequate conduct remedies. Debates over merger policy can no longer proceed without reference to empirical evidence.

(Jonathan B. Baker, Professor, American University Washington College of Law; former Director, Bureau of Economics, Federal Trade Commission)

Mergers, Merger Control, and Remedies fills the voids in our general knowledge about U.S. policy on mergers, the effectiveness of that policy, and the consequences of mergers that do occur for consumers and other market participants. Kwoka is clear and complete in his discussion of the analytical challenges of studying these questions and is persuasive in his argument that these issues are of central importance in the US economy and, in particular, in the crafting of US merger policy. Lawyers, economic consultants, and government officials will benefit from reading this book.

(Sara Fisher Ellison, Department of Economics, MIT)

Merger policy is starting to be influenced by the growing literature on merger retrospectives, and Kwoka's book brings that work together, offering a great way to learn about it. I look forward to teaching from this book and I strongly recommend it to antitrust decision-makers.

(Joseph Farrell, Professor of Economics, University of California, Berkeley; former Chief Economist, Department of Justice and Federal Trade Commission)

Kwoka's new book effectively sets the stage for...enforcement agencies to undertake initiatives and projects...[T]he book moves the debate forward and toward steps to improve the effectiveness of merger enforcement policies.

(Robert A. Skitol The Antitrust Source)

A frequent lament in academe goes this way: 'Wouldn't it be great if someone put together all of the studies on....' For retrospective analyses of 'close call' but nevertheless consummated mergers, Kwoka (Northeastern Univ.) provides just that -- and more. Highly Recommended.

The Cult of the Amateur: How blogs, MySpace, YouTube, and the rest of today's user-generated media are destroying our economy, our culture,

Amateur hour has arrived, and the audience is running the show

In a hard-hitting and provocative polemic, Silicon Valley insider and pundit Andrew Keen exposes the grave consequences of today’s new participatory Web 2.0 and reveals how it threatens our values, economy, and ultimately the very innovation and creativity that forms the fabric of American achievement.

Our most valued cultural institutions, Keen warns—our professional newspapers, magazines, music, and movies—are being overtaken by an avalanche of amateur, user-generated free content. Advertising revenue is being siphoned off by free classified ads on sites like Craigslist; television networks are under attack from free user-generated programming on YouTube and the like; file-sharing and digital piracy have devastated the multibillion-dollar music business and threaten to undermine our movie industry. Worse, Keen claims, our “cut-and-paste” online culture—in which intellectual property is freely swapped, downloaded, remashed, and aggregated—threatens over 200 years of copyright protection and intellectual property rights, robbing artists, authors, journalists, musicians, editors, and producers of the fruits of their creative labors.

In today’s self-broadcasting culture, where amateurism is celebrated and anyone with an opinion, however ill-informed, can publish a blog, post a video on YouTube, or change an entry on Wikipedia, the distinction between trained expert and uninformed amateur becomes dangerously blurred. When anonymous bloggers and videographers, unconstrained by professional standards or editorial filters, can alter the public debate and manipulate public opinion, truth becomes a commodity to be bought, sold, packaged, and reinvented.

The very anonymity that the Web 2.0 offers calls into question the reliability of the information we receive and creates an environment in which sexual predators and identity thieves can roam free. While no Luddite—Keen pioneered several Internet startups himself—he urges us to consider the consequences of blindly supporting a culture that endorses plagiarism and piracy and that fundamentally weakens traditional media and creative institutions.

Offering concrete solutions on how we can reign in the free-wheeling, narcissistic atmosphere that pervades the Web, THE CULT OF THE AMATEUR is a wake-up call to each and every one of us.

From Publishers Weekly
Keen's relentless "polemic" is on target about how a sea of amateur content threatens to swamp the most vital information and how blogs often reinforce one's own views rather than expand horizons. But his jeremiad about the death of "our cultural standards and moral values" heads swiftly downhill. Keen became somewhat notorious for a 2006 Weekly Standard essay equating Web 2.0 with Marxism; like Karl Marx, he offers a convincing overall critique but runs into trouble with the details. Readers will nod in recognition at Keen's general arguments—sure, the Web is full of "user-generated nonsense"!—but many will frown at his specific examples, which pretty uniformly miss the point. It's simply not a given, as Keen assumes, that Britannica is superior to Wikipedia, or that record-store clerks offer sounder advice than online friends with similar musical tastes, or that YouTube contains only "one or two blogs or songs or videos with real value." And Keen's fears that genuine talent will go unnourished are overstated: writers penned novels before there were publishers and copyright law; bands recorded songs before they had major-label deals. In its last third, the book runs off the rails completely, blaming Web 2.0 for online poker, child pornography, identity theft and betraying "Judeo-Christian ethics." (June)

Thought-provoking, but lacks some essential logic
By A. J Terry
Because I work in traditional media (book and magazine publishing) and regret how magazine and newspaper publishing are being decimated by competition from cheap (and free) Internet ad sales, I thought I'd like this book more than I did. Particularly since I agree with its premise that the vast majority of the free content on the Internet that is not supplied by traditional publishers is of less-than-professional quality. And that the Internet is home to a great deal of junk information, narcissistic self-expression, childish insults (the number of people who are 45 going on 13 is astounding, as is the number of the quasi-literate), slander, and scams.

However, although _The Cult of the Amateur_ is highly thought provoking, it is marred by sloppy thinking. For one thing: "Amateur" is never defined. Professionalism is a complicated concept in the fields of literature, music, visual arts, and dance (the last is a field this book does not cover, but it is one I am familiar with as a performer and teacher). Professionalism is often not defined by whether the person makes his or her living as a writer, musician, etc. Most people in most arts fields, including some highly skilled and well-known artists, simply cannot earn a living working in the arts full time because the pay is typically too low. Professionalism is sometimes defined by whether the artist has passed "gatekeepers," in the form of publishers or producers, or by winning contests. On the other hand, in the fields of live music and dance performance, this is often not valid, as the hiring parties often do not know enough technically to know whether the performers are any good. I have heard professionalism defined as whether the artist continually strives to achieve his or her best--and then studies and works to improve even more. That would have been a good definition for this book to adopt.

But even the book's implied definition of professionalism, which is the passing of gatekeepers, is not consistent. For example, the book discusses how some amateurs were recruited by major companies via contests to create advertising material for those companies. The winners were paid, more than a pittance though less than seasoned pros--which seems reasonable enough, since beginners in a field are usually paid less. Instead of viewing this as a situation where some beginners gained a toehold in the field of professional advertising and a credit to put on the resume when applying for advertising jobs, the book laments it as professional opportunities and money being thrown away on rank amateurs. But: The contest winners did pass the gatekeepers.

The book fails to address another aspect of the Internet that degrades the quality of the publications on it: The Internet heavily rewards change. The ethos is that change is inherently good, and frequent change means a much higher search engine rank. And many people are blogging, or providing free informational articles, to promote their businesses. (Another aspect of the Internet this book does not address: It assumes everyone except big businesses blogs, posts, and chats on e-lists out of sheer narcissism.) Not infrequently these promotional bloggers or site owners are professional writers who have passed "gatekeepers" elsewhere.

But: If they were writing for traditional book and magazine publishers, together with the publisher they would _finish_ each work and perfect it as far as humanly possible. Every monthly issue of a magazine is a different, polished publication. Even the most frequently updated books, such as directories, are only published annually. But the work on a website is supposed to be never done--meaning many of the best writer/website owners post half-finished work and fluff just to keep up their search engine rank. Others constantly chase people to write free "guest" articles--so the website owners can get on with their real writing work. The least scrupulous website owners and bloggers (these are not, I sincerely hope, professional writers), merely lift material from other sites: The ethos of change is yet another incentive to violate copyright.

The book also displays no historical sense beyond a few years ago. (When I first saw the subtitle, my snide thought was, "Today's Internet as opposed to that of the Middle Ages?") For example, it decries book self-publishing as an Internet phenomenon. Which isn't technically correct, since most books are not actually published on the net. But to get back to history: Self-publishing was the main model of book publishing before the 19th century. Everyone can name "great works of literature" that were self-published, as well as "great authors" who published pseudonymously (which this book says is also an Internet phenomenon). Everyone can also name what now are judged really awful self-published books that were bestsellers in their time (for example, Lady Caroline Lamb's celebrity tell-all novel about her affair with Lord Byron). And, some at least can name journalists, such as the novelist Colette's first husband Willy, who shamelessly wrote positive reviews of work by spouses, friends, etc., at times under false names.

As someone who has both worked for "traditional" publishers as an editor and writer, and who has self-published, I don't feel the dismissal of all self-published books as junk is fair. Both traditional and self-publishers tend to view the public as a very important gatekeeper: Does the book sell well? If so, it's of significant value to a significant number of consumers--and its sales keep the publisher in business. Why is someone who invests all their money in self-publishing books considered a narcissist, while someone who invests all their money in self-publishing software is considered an entrepreneur? Well, that's partly because our culture has a low estimation of the arts, an attitude this book continually ascribes to the Internet but which is far more wide-ranging and long-standing. If people valued well-written works, our best magazines and newspapers wouldn't need to sell ads for other companies' products to stay in business--and therefore would not be suffering so from competitive advertising on the Internet. And also, readers would not be so eager to violate copyright law, a problem the Internet has increased exponentially by the ease of pirating works and distributing the copies.

I agree with this book's premise that there is simply too much stuff on the Internet. There is far more information and entertainment available to everyone, than any one person can ever use or effectively sort out. However, that has been true for a long time--the information just didn't use to be on the Internet. People have always chatted informally, and critiqued books, plays, etc. for their friends--they just didn't do as much of it in writing. Since the invention of photography, people have shown around their home photos and movies (and earlier, their amateur watercolors). Since the average person became literate, people have kept diaries--most just didn't make them public.

And, there have always been amateur publications and minor professional ones--little club newsletters, neighborhood newspapers, and so on. Publications for which there was _some_ gatekeeping, but readers never expected them to be of the same quality as a large daily newspaper or national magazine. Nor have readers ever expected a tabloid to be the same kind of publication as a major daily. But, I do not agree with the author's premise that gatekeepers for publications, no matter how prestigious, are so invariably right that readers should simply accept whatever they say. Everyone should learn to analyze and evaluate the information they receive (though most people don't seem to) no matter whether the source is a blog on the Internet, a tabloid, or a major daily newspaper

I believe, by the way, that the insatiable appetite for attention and confession displayed on many amateur e-groups and blogs, is fueled by the practices of some traditional media, especially television and the tabloids. After years of seeing the media obsess over the most minute details of celebrities' lives--not to mention any real scandals--people have come to believe that the public is equally fascinated with all details of their own lives, and that publishing those details turns them, too, into celebrities. Any potentially scandalous behavior of their own seems like just good copy, as celebrity drinking problems and adulteries do to the tabloids. For these amateurs any attention--real or fancied--is a valued payment.

_The Cult of the Amateur_ points out many problems inherent in this transitional period. The models for magazine, book, and newspaper publishing, and the distribution of music and films, are drastically changing. Major and excellent businesses are losing money; many smaller ones have been bankrupted.

But, I believe that within a few years a new stratification of publication and distribution will arise, to aid both readers and publishers. Professional online (or even printed) publications, paid for by subscription or otherwise, will aid readers by doing what traditional book and magazine publishers have always done. That is, by sorting through a vast quantity of information submitted, choosing and collecting that of particular interest on a specific topic, or to a certain group of readers, then editing and otherwise refining the information to ensure the best quality and presentation. Ultimately, such online publications would greatly aid readers adrift in a sea of search results--and also, by making money, be able to pay their contributors and editors. (I agree with this book that most writers and artists can't spend the huge amount of time, and often money, required for professionalism unless someone pays them; whether this is consumers buying the work, or companies helping to produce and/or distribute the work in return for a share of the profits.) So, perhaps people wanting to read amateur work will read blogs, just as people who do not want an in-depth book review have always asked friends casual questions about the book. But readers wanting quality will turn to professional publications, on line or in print; just as they've long turned to newspapers, rather than rumors, for most of their news.

Unfortunately, the publishers that figure out how to make money in the new world of publishing and distribution, may not be the same as some of the best ones now in business. Also, making money in publishing, music, and films _does_ depend on the enforcement of copyright law, and given the ethics of many Internet users, I think publishers need better technical protection systems than any now existing. I do not believe most publishers can continue to rely on ad sales--there are just too many places to advertise cheaply on the Internet.

This book continually points the free-ad-competition finger at Craigslist. But the fact is that any small business can now create a large, four-color, long-term website of their own for less than the price of one printing of one classified (or small display) ad in a major newspaper or magazine: And most of them are doing it. Also, an enormous number of websites, including amateur ones, are trying to sell banner ads and links. With so many Internet venues for cheap advertising--even if Craigslist went out of business instantly--the revenues from most advertising sold either on the Internet or off it are likely to continue minimal.

I also believe that new software will be developed to help the individual consumer search for and sort out the material of most interest to him or her (which is a different issue from whether it is "good").

Opinion without insight is worthless, stupid.
By Dr. David Arelette
Most people will hate this book because it's about them and their mediocrity - the rush to say something creates the publication of total rubbish based on wishful thinking, abysmally poor analysis and even lower standards of education and critical thinking. The bonus is all this stupidity will remain in the ether for ever so the amateurs will never be able to hid themselves. The new paradigm will be "Who Cares" as the social media overload is seen as being worthless, even by the moron class.

so that's a good thing.
By Rebecca Gatrell
When I read this book, I felt as though the author were writing from attack mode arguing with an unseen foe. I found it difficult to get through. It made me think though, so that's a good thing.

Ignatius Loyola: A Biography of the Founder of the Jesuits, by Phillip Caraman

To mark the 500th anniversary of the birth of Ignatius Loyola and the 450th anniversary of the foundation of the Society of Jesus, this book portrays Ignatius, his life as a chivalrous Spanish courtier, his conversion and the early years of the Society of Jesus. The author, a Jesuit priest and historian, aims to show Ignatius, who is often seen as a humourless ascetic, as a man of wit and humanity.

Review

“This is a truly comprehensive text and does a wonderful job at supplying the underlying motives and theory as well as the critical “in practice” elements that many books lack. It spans all types of M&A and restructuring transactions and covers all the relevant knowledge from the academic research to the practical legal, accounting, and regulatory details. The combination of great writing and active case learning make this book the best I have seen in the M&A and restructuring arena.”--Matthew T. Billett, University of Iowa

5 stars for book's content; knocked off one star due to flaws in electronic version
By 5to8
This book's content is excellent, in my opinion. I will leave content reviews to others.

My review is intended to warn potential buyers of a couple of flaws in the electronic versions (Kindle for Mac and Kindle for iPhone). They are not fatal flaws, but they do detract a little from the reading experience.

Problem #1. Being a finance textbook, it includes finance equations. On both the Mac and the iPhone, you must use the View Options tool to set the background to Black in order to read the formulas. If you set the background to Sepia or White, those equations render so poorly on screen, that they become unreadable. They look like a low-resolution scan of a scan of scan. Broken, incomplete, moth-eaten. Timeworn, like something out of an ancient manuscript.

In the Mac version, they are not separate images, so they can't be enlarged. In the iPhone version, enlargement is possible and actually exposes the underlying cause of the problem: the Kindle software superimposes a layer of lighter-color text on top of the equations' native black type, thereby making the final result so hard to interpret. I find myself needing to constantly toggle background colors between Sepia (easier on the eyes for general reading) and Black (to read formulas).

To the editor: please either remove the added text layer, or convert the equations to type, in the same font as the remainder of the textbook.

Problem #2. In the iPhone version, touching the footnote hyperlinks only seems to work in one direction: forward. In other words, touching a numbered footnote embedded in the text works as expected (it take the reader to the linked footnote at the end of the chapter), but when the reader attempts to reverse direction and go back to the original reading point, it doesn't work -- the Kindle software merely moves a single page backward.

Perhaps this problem is due to the fact that footnote text is left-aligned, instead of being indented. Since the footnote hyperlinks are so close to the left edge of the phone screen, it seems logical the the software would be unable to tell that the reader's finger is trying to touch a hyperlink, not trying to go back one page.

To the editor: please try indenting footnote text to see whether this fixes the problem.

Very informative. But not what I needed. I was looking for details on how to account for those types of transactions.

Excellent Resource!
By Sonya Jeffords
Chess is a game that I have loved for a long time. As a child, I used to play against my dad and my brother. I joined the chess club at my middle school, and later joined the chess club and eventually chess team of my high school. On the chess team, I played in local school tournaments, city tournaments, the state tournament and even the national chess tournament one year. Our team placed 2nd in our division at the state tournament, but we were close to last in our division at nationals. It was all fun, and a great learning experience. I loved playing competitively, and I missed it when high school was over.

After high school, I didn't play chess much anymore. I got married, started having kids, and was overall too distracted for chess. It wasn't on my priority list, and it was barely on my radar, but when my oldest daughter was turning four, suddenly it seemed important again. I really wanted to teach both of my children chess. Early education is important to me. My daughter was already learning piano, math, and reading, and I realized that she was definitely old enough and ready to start learning the basics of chess.

Despite not having any books on the subject, I started teaching Acacia and her younger sister Jasmine about chess, to the best of my ability. Teaching the names of the pieces to them was easy, but beyond that, it quickly became rather difficult. I remembered learning about/hearing about 3 year olds who could play chess, and I thought there had to be more information out there on teaching such a complicated game to a preschooler. That was when my Amazon searching began.

I searched on Amazon for books on teaching chess, and clicked on nearly every link that popped up. Book after book after book was for teaching children ages 8 and up, or 9 and up, 12 and up, or (rarely) 6/7 and up. None were on teaching 2 and up, 3 and up, or 4 and up, until finally I came across Chess is Child's Play, for teaching ages 2 and up. After reading on it for a few minutes, I discovered that the book had not even been released yet. At that point, being a book-reviewer, I looked up the publisher's web address to request a review copy. I actually didn't find the contact information I needed from the publisher's website, so I contacted one of the authors, Laura Sherman, and she was kind enough to request the review copy for me (and also to do an author interview with me!).

In the meantime, I continued struggling along with trying to teach my daughter chess on my own.

When the book arrived, I was immediately impressed with the physical quality. This is a hard-cover book, well-made, with great paper quality, and the diagrams/pictures are large and easy to see. The book has a friendly feel to it.

When I started reading, I noticed early on that a lot of the ideas and methods I'd been using with my daughter already were actually included in this book. It felt good to know I was on the right track. At the same time, the book also pointed out many of the exact same mistakes I had made in teaching! It was almost as if the authors had been watching me, and then documented my "common mistakes" such as trying to teach the pawn too soon, and teaching other concepts out of order. It is easy to see that the authors really know what they are talking about in this book and that they truly have experience teaching chess to young children. The order of things in this book is logical, and makes a lot more sense than what I had come up with on my own.

This book is not specifically for preschool age children, but is actually written for children of any age. It will help you teach your child chess whether you are experienced or have never played the game before yourself. The lessons are simple enough for young children, but captivating enough to keep the attention of older children, and parents as well.

The first three chapters are Why Chess?, What You Should Expect from the Lessons, and Tips on Teaching. These three chapters formed an excellent introduction to the game. The next chapter is Special Exercises for Two to Four-Year-Olds.

After that, each chess piece is learned individually, and has its own chapter. The pieces are taught in a specific order, which makes them easier to learn. In between some of the chapters on the chess pieces, there is a chapter on taking the other players' pieces, and one on how to attack and defend pieces. These concepts are revisited again later in the book. After learning how to move the King, but before learning to move the Knight and Pawn, there is a chapter on Check and a chapter on Checkmate. The order of the pieces and concepts made a lot of sense, and the authors make a note now and then to remind parents not to bring up certain ideas or concepts yet. The instructions in this book are very clear, and easy to follow.

After learning all the pieces and the basics of attacking, defending, check and checkmate, the authors included a chapter on the difference between legal and illegal moves. Then there is a chapter on how to set up the chess board, and a chapter on playing that first real game.

All the basics have been covered at this point, and now the book includes some of the more complicated concepts to learn and teach. Castling comes next after playing your first game with the chess board set up properly, and then there are tips for opening strategies. The value of the pieces is covered, with tips for teaching this to older children and tips for teaching it to younger children. There is a whole chapter written on how your own pieces can get in your way, and then more on attacking and defending, going a little more in depth on these topics. Getting out of check has its own chapter, and of course more tips on spotting and forming checkmate is covered, and a chapter about stalemates and draws.

One thing I love about this book is that it is full of mini-games to play with your child. Especially for a younger child, the process of learning to play a full game can take several months. In the meantime, simply teaching lessons would get boring rather quickly, and I would imagine many children would lose interest. The mini-games in this book solve that dilemma by creating interactive games you can play every step of the way. Again, with the mini-games, some were exactly what I had been using, or planning to use, to teach my daughter, and some showed me that other ideas of mine would have possibly been the opposite of helpful. The authors' insight and experience showed well with these mini-games, and really the entire book.

I received this book as an experienced chess player. I already knew how to play chess, but this book helped me learn to better teach it. Chess is Child's Play filled in a lot of gaps in my teaching. Sometimes when you are really good at something, you'll overlook the smaller details that beginners need to pay attention to. This book really helped point out to me some of the concepts that are difficult for beginners, but which I take for granted and would generally consider obvious. It has helped me learn to slow down a little bit more and have more patience, and take my time, with teaching chess. This book will help you go at your child's pace, and help you to understand what your child's pace is. The authors have tips on understanding whether your child comprehends what you are teaching, and there are Troubleshooting Tips at the end of each chapter, with brief questions and answers about concepts your child may be struggling with, or getting bored with.

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

After this, I have ambitions of starting a local chess club for kids. If all goes well, you'll certainly be hearing about it here in the future!

Father Geek's "Chess is Child's Play" Book Review
By Father Geek
Chess is Child's Play: Teaching Techniques that Work is one of the better books about Chess I have come across that focuses on children. The For Dummies series of books tend to do much of what is being provided in this book, but this title handles the reader with a much kinder and gentler glove. This is important to note because the entire reason for the book's existence is to help teach a very complicated game to young developing minds. Learning anything new can be challenging and stressful, which Chess is by design. This book tempers the game's complexity with simplicity. I am reminded of the quotation by Creighton Abrams when he said, "When eating an elephant take one bite at a time." That is exactly what this book is all about and does well. The game is introduced in small portions and time is allowed for the student to digest it before a new bite is offered.

For some Gamer Geeks, this book will be of little value. Either because they have no interest in Chess or they will teach the game to their Child Geeks in a way that personally suits them. For everyone else, including teachers, non-gamer Parent Geeks, and even people who simply want to learn how to play the game on their own, Chess is Child's Play: Teaching Techniques that Work will be an enjoyable and useful read. At the very least, it's a useful resource to quickly familiarize oneself with the game's rules. My copy now holds a place of honor among my children's book collection, accessible and ready to teach the next Gamer Geek generation the classic game of Kings.

Fantastic book for teaching YOU to teach your kids!
By Austin
If you want to teach your kids to play chess, this book gives a straightforward and pragmatic approach to teach you, the parent, how to teach your kids chess. It is not a book to give to your children and send them to their room with a bunch of pieces and checkered board. Rather, it offers an approach that minimizes frustration, capitalizes on the strengths of a child's mind, and delivers far more than simply learning how to play a game. It guides parents not just through the rules and how the pieces move, but in understanding how kids learn, grow, and behave in the process. As Ben Franklin put it in 1750, "The Game of Chess is not merely an idle amusement; several very valuable qualities of the mind, useful in the course of human life, are to be acquired and strengthened by it, so as to become habits ready on all occasions; for life is a kind of Chess, in which we have often points to gain, and competitors or adversaries to contend with, and in which there is a vast variety of good and ill events, that are, in some degree, the effect of prudence, or the want of it." Sherman and Kilpatrick give simple and meaningful instruction that can be used to teach children both the idle amusement of chess AND those valuable qualities of the mind that are so useful in the course of human life.

"Chess is Child's Play" offers a new approach and a straightforward set of tools for bonding with your kids, while teaching them a skill set that will be with them for life! Three cheers for "Chess is Child's Play" and a copy to each of my friends with young children!!
