About the Author
Bill Nichols (Ph.D., UCLA) is Professor of Cinema at San Francisco State University. A leading (and founding) figure in the film studies community, Nichols is the editor of the seminal anthologies, Movies and Methods, Volumes 1 & 2 (1976; 1985) and the leading textbook in documentary film, Introduction to Documentary (2001). His other books include Ideology and the Image (1981), Representing Reality: Issues and Concepts in Documentary (1991), Blurred Boundaries: Questions of Meaning in Contemporary Culture (1995), and Maya Deren and the American Avant-Garde (ed., 2001).

Applying the Sociological Imagination to Cinema (for film scholars who don't actually care what sociology is)

Attempts to discuss film from a sociological perspective without actually acknowledging the field of sociology or any sociological terms. I appreciate where the guy is coming from, but why treat this social approach to film as a novelty when you could have drawn from richer material? Why introduce a term like "the social imaginary" when C. Wright Mills already coined "the sociological imagination" fifty years ago?

I bought the book as a required text in a film analysis course, but reading it really just made me wish the course was being taught by someone who actually had a background in sociology.

This book was peculiar. I was expecting something slightly more "engaging" when I read the title. However, that being said I read all the way until the end to give it the benefit of the doubt. There were numerous amounts of grammatical errors, in addition to the excessive amount of overly wordy ideas. The book was physically of proper quality, however, its contents were lackluster.

About the Author
Jean Sasson grew up in a small town in America's deep south before moving to the Middle East in 1978 to work at a prestigious royal hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In 1985, she met Princess Sultana, who inspired the widely acclaimed Princess Trilogy. Jean later worked as freelance writer in Lebanon and Kuwait, conducting interviews with Kuwaitis who survived the first Gulf war, as well as high ranking Kuwaiti officials before, during and after the War. Her affection for the Middle East has been the motivation for a number of her books and Jean has spent her career sharing the personal stories of many courageous women. Princess More Tears to Cry is Jean's 12th book and the fourth in the Princess series.

The legacy continues!

This book series will always be my favorite. As usual, when I picked up this newest book, I could NOT put it down.

This book appeals to readers of the previous series and new readers alike, as all past occurrences are explained at least briefly. But, you definitely get much more out of this book if you've read the series. I don't say that because it's confusing, but because you genuinely get to watch the characters, who are real people, grow as they age. It makes reading the series so incredibly satisfying knowing that these are real events, and getting to know her family and watch them change.

There are many pressing stories that are discussed through this new book, but the most obvious one is the discussion of Raif Badawi. I have been following his story for months and I was very pleased to know the Princess desired action in this situation. You can feel her passion, and sometimes even desperation or sadness, in every word. So long as the princess lives, I will look forward to hearing about her new fights for women's rights and saving innocents from harm.

Another reason I love this book is because of how informative it is. Not only do you get captivated by the Princess' personal life, but you also get captivated by real life conflicts that make it so much more interesting and less complicated to understand.

If you are a lover of women deserving proper treatment in society, and a lover of a great, and true narrative, I would highly suggest this book!

I expected a different narrative.

If I could give this book a 3.5 stars, I would. The "Princess" books are a series. I believe this is the fifth book in the series. Due to security concerns, it is written by an American author based on her correspondence with a Saudi Arabian Princess named "Sultana".

In Sultana's previous books, she discusses life is Saudi Arabia and how it impact her relatives and immediate family. She explains the difference between how men and women are treated in the country, as well as her attempts to make sure that her daughters can achieve all their dreams despite living in this oppressive society. She speaks about scandals within her own family, as well as scandals within the royal family. Of course, more often than not, the royals are not severely punished for the same behavior that can cause an ordinary citizen to lose a limb, or even their life.

At the end of the last book, Sultana and her sisters express a desire to help those less fortunate than them. Therefore, this book "Princess: Secrets to Share" speaks less of her own family and the evolution of Saudi Arabian culture, and instead focuses on her humanitarian endeavors.

I would have preferred that she spend more time talking about living under Saudi Arabian rule, how this affects her family (especially her daugheters and female grandchildren now that they are all much older), and what has changed in the country both for better and worse. While I feel that it was good and inspiring of her to speak of how she is trying to influence change in Saudi Arabian culture, I would have enjoyed this book more if that was not the focus of her new book, but rather if it read like her past books.

The "Princess" books by Jean Sasson are in my top fifty books of all time. This was not my favorite. The first four had rich stories woven throughout the entire book. This book felt like 30% stories and 70% of explanations of other stuff that felt like a text book. I was looking for stories, so it might have more to do with me than the book because I had expectations based on prior books. I feel terrible giving a low rating. I kept thinking the stories would re-appear.... When the next book comes out, I will read reviews before buying. I never dreamed that I would not LOVE a book in this series written by Jean Sasson!!! Never!

Not the goody-two shoes I thought he was

Who knew that Mr. Lady Bing was so opinionated? In that respect, this book was a pleasant surprise, because anyone can give the standard PR/PC spiel. I thought I was getting the usual sports bio, "We went into game 5 tired and spent, yada yada yada..." While Wayne does include things like that, he does provide insight on what it feels like to be a highly recognizable person. Most celebrities are too egotistical to admit to feelings of lonliness at the top, yet Wayne admits these feelings, and also enjoys his moments. I also liked how he pulled no punches when it came to his feelings about Peter Pocklington. You'll want to get into a hot shower and scrub yourself red, after reading the chapters on The Trade. He also occasionally decries The Supreme Lord Sather. Nice to see someone in the game not worship at the altar once in a while, isn't it? Yet he's still the greatest ambassador hockey has had. This book is better than Kevin Lowe's gloss-job, I'll tell ya that.

it was an exelent book all of the quots were great

I loved the quotes. once I started to read it i could not stop. I could not belive I read a book that was that long. Wayne Gretzky is the greatest man who ever lived. It is amasing when you think about it how many peaople try to idolise him. go into a hockey rink and look to see how many people actally do idolise him. And it is all because his jursey was too big for him when he was playng with the 17 year olds. My favorite part was when walter Gretzky quotes "I did not build a rink to watch my son grow up to be a pro I did it so I could watch from the kitchen where it is worm"

This was a great book!!

I thought that this was a great book. It tells about his first ten years in the NHL and how he broke tons of records. If you are wanting to learn more about Wayne Gretzky I would recommend reading this book. I just picked up this book the other day when he retired just to see how great of a hockey player he was and forever will be. I especially enjoyed this book from a hockey players view since I have played hockey for nine years and enjoy this sport verry much. So if you want to read a great book by a great hockey player read this book.

About the Author
Angela Hall is currently Lead Biomedical Scientist in Immunology for the Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust, where she runs and teaches the Specialist Diploma in Immunology course, and a member of the Specialist Advisory Panel for Immunology at the Institute of Biomedical Science. Having trained as a Biomedical Scientist in the Immunology Department at the Churchill Hospital Oxford, she made rapid progression to BMS grade 3 gained chartered scientist status in 2008. Christine Yates is Senior Chief Biomedical Scientist in Immunology and Haematology at the Hull Royal Infirmary, a member of the IBMS Specialist Advisory Panel for Immunology, IBMS Chief Examiner for Immunology (2006 to 2009) and has been CPA Assessor for Immunlogy since 2003.

Vogt argues against two widespread interpretations of the common law--that it consists of rules, and that lawful action is what right reason prescribes. While she rejects the rules-interpretation, she argues that the prescriptive reason-interpretation correctly captures key ideas of the Stoics' theory, but misses the substantive side of their conception of the law. The sage fully understands what is valuable for human beings, and this makes her actions lawful. The Stoics emphasize the revisionary nature of their theory; whatever course of action perfect deliberation commands, even if it be cutting off one's limb and eating it, we should act on its command, and not be held back by conventional judgments.

Overrated

I ordered this book along with a book on Sashiko by Susan Briscoe. This book cost 3 X the price of Sashiko and that would have been okay, however, I could not help but compare the size of the pictures - this book is small and while the pictures are wonderful they are SMALL. The pictures although few of actual boro pieces in the Sashiko book were LARGE and also lovely. Plus, lots of information on the history of running stitches in Japan and tutorials on HOW as opposed to the one liners in this book. The concept of this book is in itself lovely, just a bit too stingy for my taste especially after comparing the two. Even if all I was looking for was inspiration - still, the pictures were too stingy. Might be best to order this book by itself so as not to compare it with another much better book in my opinion.

About the Author
Dr. Keith Folse is a Professor of TESOL at the University of Central Florida. He is the author of 57 textbooks on a variety of subjects from grammar to vocabulary to composition, including five best-selling books in the Great Writing series by National Geographic Learning. Elena Vestri Solomon is currently a lecturer in the B. Ed program for future teachers in Abu Dhabi's Emirates College for Advanced Education. She received her MA in Applied Linguistics from the University of South Florida, Tampa, and has lived and worked in Italy, Spain, France, Hungary, Romania, Uzbekistan, and UAE. She has authored/co-authored over a dozen academic textbooks in composition, grammar, and listening/speaking/note-taking. April Muchmore-Vokoun is a faculty member in the English for Academic Purposes Department at Hillsborough Community College (HCC) in Tampa, Florida. She has taught in intensive English, college-level, and worksite study ESL programs. Her current academic interests include reading and writing skills as well as listening-speaking strategies. Additionally, she has had extensive experience in the areas of international student advising and event programming.

Best English writing book that I have ever read.

The best ever writing text that I have ever read . It is very difficult to find a grammar book which explain the English writing process in a logical step by step way, specially for non native speakers like us . This book buildup the writing process which is very useful for academics in developing countries, who are heading to higher education in English speaking countries like U.K or Australia.

Great first book for the series

This book is terrific, however it is much too easy for my children. I thought I would be able to use it for my sixth grader but this is definitely for an elementary school aged child. The book is organized well and would be a great resource for an elementary school teacher or homeschooler.

A definitive, practical text on crystal growing.

I first used this book in 1963 as a tutorial on crystal growing
methods. Not only did it provide step-by-step instructions that
actually worked, but it explained the physics of crystals and the process of crystallization in language that a high school student could easily understand. I used various salts to grow exquisite
crystals of different colors, obtaining most of my materials from local sources and my chemistry teacher. My experiments were performed in a depression under our house ... with a dirt floor. this was my "chemistry laboratory." The evaporation method produced cloudy crystals, so I reverted to the supersaturated technique to produce perfect specimens. My heating mantle consisted of a coffee can with a hole cut in it to insert a light bulb. This worked very well. Over the years I have frequently referred to this book and recommended it to others. I still do so. It is worth its weight in gold.

I purchased my first copy of this when I was a teenager, and I've never seen such a thorough treatment of crystals and crystal growing since. I was happy to find this to replace the one I lost.

The emphasis throughout the book is on linear programming skills via the algorithmic solution of small-scale problems, both in the general sense and in the specific applications where these problems naturally occur. The book arose from lecture notes prepared during the years 1985-1987 while I was a graduate assistant in the Department of Mathematics at The Pennsylvania State University. I used a preliminary draft in a Methods of Management Science class in the spring semester of 1988 at Lock Haven University. Having been extensively tried and tested in the classroom at various stages of its development, the book reflects many modifications either suggested directly by students or deemed appropriate from responses by students in the classroom setting. My primary aim in writing the book was to address common errors and difficulties as clearly and effectively as I could.

highly erudite

I took the class for which this book was used as a sophomore, and found it to be very accessible. In retrospect, I would have liked to have studied some linear algebra before having taken this course, but still, I found this to be a very interesting course as a stand-alone.
