Easy and satisfying read

An easy read with a satisfying and action-packed plot. I liked the characters and enjoyed the combination of supernatural powers and the ordinary coming-of-age challenges. All in all, a good tween/teen book.

I haven't read any of the other Gifted books, and I enjoyed this enough to do so. This one stood alone well - there were references to things that clearly happened in previous books, but not knowing all the background didn't prevent me from following the story.

Good Intermediate level book

I have the first volume and I liked so I ordered the second volume. Lots of puzzles that are challenging. This is a great puzzle book for those looking for intermediate level puzzles. By intermediate I mean puzzles that dont give you a clue, like clue you in on what to look for Mate in 3, find the pin, find the fork etc... So if you already have an understanding of basic tactical motifs you will like this book. If you are just starting off and dont have a grasp of basic tactics then you may not like this book at this stage. What is really apealling about the puzzles is that you are not always going to get a mate or go up a big piece. Many of the puzzles involve creating a threat and going up a pawn and a few puzzles you need to recognize the position is lost and go for a draw. And in real play you will find one pawn can be the difference between a win and a loss. When I was first working out the problems I was thinking They were using the same puzzles as the previous book, but I did not find a duplicate and realize that its my pattern recognition that has improved. The puzzles are from real games and if you are a clubhouse/coffee shop player your going to see these motifs appear a lot. It is an excellent book, lots of puzzles and great practice. like the first volume, this is a nice book.

A great way to study chess!

I have Palliser's 'The Complete Chess Workout' and I enjoyed it, so when this second volume came out, I knew that I needed it buy it as well and to buy a second copy for a friend of mine.

I often do not the time to sit down and play out the moves in a game, so I find puzzle books like these to be ideal for momentary diversions from my daily tasks.

Academic, erudite and immensely readable

If Michael Dylan Foster's book reads much like a Doctoral dissertation, it is because it is based on his 2003 Doctoral dissertation: "Morphologies of Mystery: Yôkai and Discourses of the Supernatural in Japan, 1666-1999". That noted, "Pandemonium and Parade" is in no way a watered-down version of its parent text. It includes further research conducted over the following seven years, along with a generous sampling of illustrations, both historical and current.

In addition to being an erudite and meticulously researched history of the yôkai phenomenon in Japan, Dr. Foster is an excellent and engaging writer, who successfully conveys a deep love for his subject matter, while exploring in depth the cultural, psychological and fantastical elements of both the historical and present-day fascination these outlandish supernatural but all too earthly spirits hold over the consciousness of both the Japanese and students of folklore worldwide.

Dr. Foster's original Doctoral thesis has accompanied me on two visits to Japan; since its release, "Pandemonium and Parade" has been my companion on yet another, and is a volume I keep at close hand here at home, both for reference and for enjoyment of his literary style.

Anyone with an interest in yôkai will find this a richly rewarding addition to their library, I cannot think of a finer work in English on the subject.

Academic Yet Excellent

Pandemonium and Parade is not an easy read. The author's highly academic approach to his subject matter makes this book often read like a dressed-up doctoral dissertation.

That said, there is a wealth of information regarding (for lack of a better term) the supernatural in Japanese culture, and the multi-disciplinary approach really expands the subject's overall context.

I can't help wishing, however, that the book had a somewhat more comprehensive index and perhaps a glossary of terms (I know the field of yokai fairly well and still found many new terms I had either not encountered before, or had found in very different context). I also wish Japanese terms were introduced with their kanji renderings, which can be so highly informative in understanding some of the nuance of the vocabulary.

If you are looking for a good introduction to yokia and the supernatural in Japan, you are probably better off with F. Hadland Davis or Royall Tyler. But, if you know the subject reasonably well, this book will really expand and deepen both your knowledge of Japanese monster-ology, and your appreciation.

A Few Drawbacks, But Still Worthy

Yes, the book is academic and it can sometimes bog down in boring rhetoric. It is rarely engaging to the point of one's being unable to put it down, but, after the longwinded introductory chapter, it does provide a very interesting overview of the history and significance of yokai in Japanese culture, past and present (including manga and anime). Michael Dylan Foster not only explains some of the chief representatives of traditional and contemporary yokai, he provides an excellent history of how yokai evolved as a serious subject of inquiry and also discusses the place of yokai in the matrix of Japanese culture. Academics are likely to appreciate the book for its insights more than those mainly interested in light reading about the yokai phenomenon. The book shouldn't be compared to those that are chiefly collections of old myths and legends.

For me, a major drawback is the relative lack of space devoted to one major form of yokai, the yurei or ghost, which is so important in Japanese literature, theatre, and art. And, despite the author's expert analysis of the kuchi-sake-onna or Slit-Mouthed-Woman, I was surprised that he never alludes to the possibility of potential influence from the gabu head in the bunraku puppet theatre. The gabu shows the face of a pretty girl but when the puppeteer pulls a string the upper and lower parts of the face are split by a gruesome, ear-to-ear mouth of sharp gold teeth, the effect of which is heightened by eyes that widen to become large squares, and horns that sprout from the hair. The character is really a serpent spirit in disguise. Come to think of it, Japan's upbiquitous serpents also get short shrift in this book, which, admittedly, does not attempt to be an encyclopedia, like Yokai Attack!

Pandemonium and Parade isn't perfect but it's a very worthy contribution.

About the Author
Rolf Schmid obtained his PhD in 1970. After post-doctoral studies in France and the USA, he joined the research laboratories of Henkel KGaA in Dsseldorf in 1972 where he became Director of the Biotechnology Laboratories. In 1987, he moved to the 'Gesellschaft fr Biotechnologische Forschung' (GBF) in Braunschweig where he headed the Division of Enzyme Technology and Natural Products Research.
In 1993, he accepted an invitation to build up the newly founded Institute for Technical Biochemistry at the University of Stuttgart. He is further in charge of the Department of Molecular Biotechnology at the Fraunhofer Institute for Membrane Science and Biotechnology in Stuttgart, and he is chairman of the IUPAC Commission of Biotechnology.
Vlada Urlacher is a young researcher and is the head of the Biocatalysis Group at the Institute for Technical Biochemistry at the University of Stuttgart.

About the Author
Wilfrid J. Harrington, OP, currently lectures at the Priory Institute and at the Church of Ireland Theological College, both in Dublin. An Irish Dominican and professor emeritus of the Milltown Institute of Theology and Philosophy in Dublin, he earned degrees in theology at the University of St. Thomas, Rome and in biblical studies at the Ecole Biblique, Jerusalem. Fr. Harrington's teaching and writing career spans more than half a century. He has published a number of books and articles in the biblical field, including Jesus Our Brother (Paulist Press 2010).

Revelation - A Theology of Hope

The distinguished scripture authority, Wilfrid Harrington presents a thorough and detailed commentary on the Book of Revelation. Although some read Revelation and find a glipse of perdition, Harrington reads Revelation and finds hope for all of humanity.
Jesus Christ, the Lamb, slain for our salvation, has come back to rescue, not to condemn. It is God's intention, and the Lamb's, that all will be saved!
Going line by line through the text of Revelation, Harrington explains how his underlying premise is derived. With scholarly attention to the original Greek text, Harrington constructs an understanding of Revelation that is filled with joy and hope for eternal life.
Harrington's work measures up nicely in comparison to the other volumes in the commentary series, Sacra Pagina. This volume is well worth the investment, particularly for the homilist, the teacher, the pastoral counselor or those attempting to help others understand the Book of Revelation.

Decent scholarship, heretical theology

Wilfrid Harrington, O.P. has written a scholarly analysis of the Book of Revelation, but his theology is heretical, and decidedly not Catholic.

For instance, Fr. Harrington denies the existence of Satan, stating, "Satan is a powerful symbol, representing the whole gamut of evil and its infectious presence in the human race".

What is more troubling, he seems to glowingly accept the teachings of his fellow Dominican, dissident theologian Edward Schillebeeckx. In an Excursus at the end of this book, Fr. Harrington states there will be Universal Salvation ("Universal salvation means that all human beings will finally be redeemed by God's gracious love"), and "There is no negative eschaton" (meaning there is no eternal hell). He agrees with Schillebeeckx's statement, "But there is no shadow kingdom of hell next to the eternally happy kingdom of God." Were there any confusion about his stance, Fr. Harrington states, "Humans, not God, have invented hell."

What these two theologians are telling us is that there will be no eternal hell, in direct opposition to the Gospels, and in direct opposition to the teachings of the Catholic Church.

While it would be pleasant to think that no matter what we do in this life, there will be no possibility of eternal damnation, this is not what Jesus Christ himself tells us in the Gospels.

I heartily agree that the Book of Revelation is indeed a message of God's love and mercy for us; it is also a Book about God's justice. We mock the Gospels if we deny the existence of Satan, and we deny God's just nature if we deny the existence of an eternal hell.

So, while his scholarship is decent, his dissident theology casts a pall (in the truest sense of the word) over this book.

To any Catholic, I would say "Let the reader beware".

Study of Revelation

The Sacra Pagina series on the New Testament is an outstanding reference work for any student of the New Testament. The book on Revelation is by Wilfred Harrington and Daniel Harrington. I was introduced to this series when I took a graduate level course in the New Testament. The professor recommended this series as excellent New Testament reference books. I lead a weekly bible discussion group and I have found this series to be of immense help. I am able to review Revelation line by line and receive the benefit of knowledgeable Catholic bible experts. I may not share the same views as the author on every passage but I can review his analysis and he also points me to other sources. I found Wilfred Harrington's views on universal salvation to be troubling. However, if you needed one book as a guide to Revelation this is it.

Se completa con un índice alfabético de películas y un índice onomástico que facilitan la ubicación de las obras y personas nombradas.
