Al Farabi: A Reintroduction for Our Times

In An Islamic Philosophy of Virtuous Religions, Joshua Parens seeks to introduce the political philosophy of Al Farabi, a tenth century Islamic philosopher, to the twenty-first century in which revolutionary Iran and Islamofascist movements aspire to a universal caliphate through jihad. As a Muslim, Al Farabi, who lived in a time of similar aspiration, wrote between the lines in an attempt to moderate these aspirations and promote religious tolerance. It is this type of writing which may assist an internal Islamic Reformation today. Joshua Paren's book is a book for both Muslims and non-Muslims today who struggle with these theological-political problems.

In this regard, this book's particular focus differs generally from the writings of Leo Strauss and Muhsin Mahdi on Al Farabi, the latter being Joshua Paren's teacher. Leo Strauss' writings are linked to his studies of Maimonides; whereas, Muhsin Mahdi's importance is that he broadened as well as deepened Strauss' insight/rediscovery through a critical recovery of Al Farabi's corpus and his scholarship culminating in his 2001 book Alfarabi and the Foundation of Islamic Political Philosophy which predates 9/11. Though Joshua Parens acknowledges his debt to his teacher in both in the Acknowledgements and throughout this book, it is not a derivative work but stands on its own.

The primary focus of Joshua Paren's study is The Attainment of Happiness, not the Principles of the Opinions of the Inhabitants of the Virtuous City as set forth in the one star review. (The Attainment of Happiness is the first part of Al Farabi's Philosophy of Plato and Aristotle.) Through Joshua Paren's close reading of The Attainment of Happiness accompanied with his deep familiarity of Al Farabi's other writings, he shows how Al Farabi seeks to moderate the ambitious through both (1) a cautionary tale and (2) a showing of the limits of reason. In a sense, it is Al Farabi's reenactment of Plato's Republic where Glaucon is replaced by "the talented and dashing young men the city is most likely to take advantage of and corrupt".

Although Joshua Parens considers his work by its title an introduction to Al Farabi, it is neither simple nor easy. One of its great strength is through his close reading of texts wherein he shows one how to read Plato and Aristotle, how Al Farabi read Plato and Aristotle and how we should read Al Farabi. It is no small task. While reading this book, one needs at one's elbow minimally Muhsin Mahdi's translation of Alfarabi: The Political Writings, The Philosophy of Plato and Aristotle in order to follow the argument. Joshua Parens considers this work as a felicitous translation though it is clear that he is familiar with Arabic since at crucial points he differs with his teacher's translation.

Joshua Parens is a much needed guide through Al Farabi's writings especially in our times when reason is under attack and all forms of unreason are on the rise.

Totally derivative

The subject (Alfarabi's Platonic critique of Islamic doctrine) is interesting, but the book itself is misleadingly presented and unoriginal. An introduction to Farabi this is most certainly not. If you read it without much familiarity with his work, you'll be hopelessly confused. Parens is an indirect writer who focuses on only one of Farabi's works (The Attainment of Happiness) and jumps right into the argument without orienting the reader effectively to the relevant text. Deceptive marketing aside, this book is really just a monograph trying to bolster the esoteric interpretation of Plato and Farabi pioneered by Leo Strauss, whose own work on Farabi (see, as a starting point, "Farabi's Plato") you can find for free online. I advise you do so, rather than spending $15 on this.

Here are the major parts of Parens' argument. First, he argues that Plato's Republic is a cautionary tale rather than a prescription. This is a compelling argument, but it's not original at all. Second, Parens argues that Farabi was deeply versed in the Republic, and saw his own work on ideal states as basically extending Plato's own goals to the Islamic context (this was Strauss' original insight). Third, he picks two areas where he thinks Farabi is particularly critical of contemporary Islamic doctrine (jihad as offensive war and the limits of human knowledge), and parses them in exhaustive detail. This is the only part of his work that's original, and it can be summed up as follows: those things that Strauss says Farabi does? He does them in these sections.

Finally, he argues that Farabi envisioned a multiplicity of virtuous religions, each developing from a particular cultural context, and that Islam--like the belief system Plato proposes in the Republic--isn't well suited to governing a heterogeneous state. Thus, like Plato's city in the Republic, Farabi's virtuous Islamic realm is intended to be neither possible nor desirable. This is also piggybacking on Strauss.

There you have it all. Parens doesn't seem to read Arabic or add any particular expertise in Islamic philosophy (he relies almost entirely on Muhsin Mahdi's interpretive work, himself a disciple of Strauss) to build off the foundation Strauss established. To anyone familiar with Strauss and Mahdi, the result reads like a first-year graduate student's work, with Parens merely serving as a compiler for arguments other people have already made in much more elegant prose. It's about as close as you can come to plagiarism without actually crossing that line. While I think the ideas in question are very serious and probably right, Strauss and Mahdi do a better job of expounding them, and are far more accessible to those unfamiliar with Farabi.

Story of Max and Rory is only 91 pages. Buyer beware that this is more short story than a book.

Don't waste your money. VERY VERY disappointing. The book is a measly 155 pages TOTAL and the story of Max and Rory is ONLY 91 pages. Their story finishes before it gets started and although I don't mind predictable, 91 pages is a short story, not a book. I also dislike that they include excerpts from PREVIOUS books in the series. My most disappointing Shalvis purchase.

Jill Shalvis didn’t fail to make my heart flutter in her new, upcoming release that’s a perfect treat to such a happy event of the year. It’s so charming, light and heartwarming.

Rory is stuck with Max and Carl (Max’s goof dog) when Max volunteered to give her a ride to her family’s home, on Christmas Eve. Whom she hasn’t seen in years. What looked like a night of driving turned to revelations they both didn’t expect they needed to hear. Will they act on their combustible chemistry now or will they let it fade away without giving it a try?

I have yet to read a book by Jill Shalvis that wouldn’t make me smile like a fool. Because One Snowy Night, though very short than I would’ve liked, was very cute and romantic enemies-to-lovers novella. One night basically changed everything and that’s no wonder considering they’re pretty stuck on the road for long hours. And though it may seem too fast-paced, it worked because again, snowy night and all the road inconvenience. But it was really lovely because of Rory’s sass and stubbornness, Max’s resistance with his feelings for Rory (because of high school past) and of course, there’s Carl. I liked that the story was neatly wrapped in a way that their past was revealed and both sides have forgiven each other for what they both did. And that actually paved way for both characters to have their chance at love.

Both characters sounded real, believable even when Rory’s a bit scared at first because she had a rough beginning. Both of them were funny and cheesy at times but it added to the sweetness of the book. Can I just say I almost melted at Max’s words? Gahhhh it’s so simple but very heartfelt with a dash of adorable. I loved him a lot! I mean, both of them! I liked that they got their HEA (even with Rory’s family whom she believed hated her) though it would be better if they have a novel-length book of their own.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book for all romance readers who want a quick and drama-free read with all the cuteness.

LOVE! LOVE! LOVE!

Rory Andrews was actually going home! To a place she left 6 years ago; Rory had left in her junior year, after setting off a chain of events, that changed everyone else's life. She had worked hard and got her GED and had been barely making ends meet at the South Bark Mutt Shop, but Rory had been getting her life together and was determined not to let her family down, like she had for the past 6 years. But instead of taking trains and busses to Tahoe, she somehow ended up with Max! the man whom hated her! And his dog Carl, that loved her!

Max had lost everything when Rory handed a tape into their high school before she quit town, and despite the fact that he had a great job and life, he still harbored some resentment to Rory…that, and a heck of a lot of sexual frustration. But when Willa talked Max in to giving Rory a ride home (not that it took much), he wasn't expecting to have his whole opinion of her change.

One Snowy Night is an amazing story! It gives me that A Christmas Carol feeling that, where everyone gets a chance at a fresh start. I LOVE Rory's character, I loved her when she was in The Trouble with Mistletoe, but she really comes into her own in this novella. Max has also shown a side we haven't seen before; a softer side, that makes him seem a little more softer…and more delicious.

The plot and writing in this book is truly superb! And I have to say that I have really fallen in love with this Jill Shalvis series! And One Snowy Night is my favorite one so far! And I hope it never ends!!

About the Author
KHANG LE
Khang Le was born in Saigon, Vietnam in 1981. When he was ten, his family moved to Los Angeles, California, and Le immersed himself in the world of comic books. During high school, a friend introduced him to the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena. At the same time, The Art of Star Wars, Episode I: The Phantom Menace came out, and making a living as a concept artist for the entertainment industry become Le's aspiration. In 2000, he got accepted to Art Center, where he had the opportunity to refine his skills to freelance for various entertainment mediums, including games, movies, music videos, and publishing. He has recently graduated and is currently traveling the world and considering all of his professional options.

FELIX YOON
Felix Yoon was born in Pennsylvania in 1982, where he spent his childhood, and later relocated to South Korea. He moved to California as he entered high school. It wasn't until senior year when Yoon decided to take art seriously as a possible occupation. After high school he entered Art Center College of Design, where he graduated with honors with a BFA in illustration. He started working as a concept artist for video games and now works as a visual development artist at DreamWorks Animation.

MIKE YAMADA
Michael Yamada was born and raised in Pasadena, California. Originally intending to be a graphic designer, Yamada attended a local community college and changed his course of study after discovering a book of Star Wars production art. He transferred to Art Center College of Design where in 2003 he graduated with honors with a BS degree in product design with a emphasis on entertainment design. He has spent the year after his graduation employed as a visual development artist at DreamWorks Animation, and working on a variety of freelance projects. He also teaches at Otis College of Art and Design.

Inspiration for my senior project

I love this book because
(a) it depicts a fantastic journey of imagination and artistic exploration,
(b) it has a sense of adventure about it,
(c) these young artists show such mind-blowing talent in the pages of this book,
(d) and it inspired me to tackle my own concept art project while I'm still in college.

As I go through my own creative process, I've often found myself referring to this book to see how they tackle the various challenges of designing unique and compelling characters, environments, and props. The commentary they make on each step of the process is just as valuable as their sketches and finished paintings because it gives insight into their mindset as they encountered problems along the way, and how they creatively overcame them. Highly recommended to all students of concept art.

Absolutely Wonderful.

Absolutely gorgeous and wonderful, the book is a fantastic addition to any library. Being a fan of concept art and Grimm tales, I was stoked to get my hands on it, and once I'd seen it in a teacher's collection--I absolutely had to own it myself.

It came quickly and in wonderful condition, and the art inside was just as beautiful as I had remembered! I was more than happy to put it on my bookshelf.

Beautiful, Imaginative, Inspirational

I bought this book originally because it sounded interesting: three artists conceptualizing the same fairytale. What I got was a book FILLED with sketches (which I love, as an artist myself). These three gentlemen walk us through their creative process visually, so you can see how blocking out character shapes turns into detailed character design with color, attitude, and even some humor. I flip through this book regularly (have had it now for two years), and I'll see a headdress here, a sword there, a detail on a gown, and it gives me new ideas for my own characters.

Of the MANY books that claim to be concept art, The Skillful Huntsman is, by far, the best I've found. Love love love.

Enjoyed FAR more than I expected! YAY! BUT THAT ENDING THO

Oh Kendare Blake, you and I have such an unwary relationship. You pull me in with these amazing plots of dead girls and dying gods, and then you make me sad with your writing (which, to be fair, isn't awful), but didn't do justice to your amazing ideas.

Until now.

As soon as I read the synopsis, I squee'd. As soon as I read the author's name, I internally sighed. I was prepared to wait until the price dropped ridiculously low before buying (if buying at all.) Until the first 3 chapters became available. And I read. And read. And read some more. And, despite my internal arguments, bought the day it came out. Kendare's writing style has tightened up nicely. The characters have become more layered (for the most part.) And the world building has vastly improved, save for one or two locations (*coughROLANTHEcough*) that I couldn't just...GET. Some woods, some cliffs, some water. Meh. I found the poisoner's arc to be the most intriguing by far. The characters were delicious. The naturalists weren't too bad themselves, save for that...DUN-DUN-DUN...LOVEEEE TRIAAAAANGGGGLE *lightning/boom/crash/* Out of the 3 sisters, I found the elementalist to be the most distasteful. I don't know if that is by author design, or the fact that I don't enjoy **SEMI-SPOILERISH**

...whiny perfect powerful girls who steal other's girls' men despite knowing that they're other girls' men. Tch. Tacky.

Also, can someone PLEASE TALK TO ME ABOUT THAT ENDING?!?!?!?!?!?! That in itself sealed the deal. That ending may have pushed it into the 4.5 zone, 'cept Amazon's all anti-fractions and whatnot.

Overall, I really enjoyed it far more than I was expecting, and aside from a couple of YA tropes that are almost unavoidable, I found this to be an immersive read (I read the whole thing in 5 hours, YO!) that I'll most definitely re-read and re-read again.

Dark, Different, and Fun!

So many YA books have either one narrator or do the duo-narrator thing, so when Three Dark Crowns promised me three narrators, I was intrigued. As a fan of epic fantasy books, which often rotate through whole swathes of character viewpoints, I was surprised to find myself a little confused at the beginning of this book. But, once I got comfortable with each princess and her setting, I really started enjoying this tale.

At first I was dubious about the three princesses being pitted against each other, but it really added so much intrigue and tension for me as a reader. You get invested in the lives of EACH princess and when you’re reading her story, you want her to succeed! Learning how each main character was dealing with her situation was very interesting for me, and I enjoyed the bits of lore sprinkled throughout the book (in the rituals, the rules, the buildings, the foods, everything!).

There is one thing in this story that royally pissed me off, and I have trouble deciding whether it makes sense or whether it was a plot device. I’m hoping for more elaboration on this front in the next book. Speaking of the next book… I can’t freaking WAIT! The way this one ended left me satisfied in some ways, but also eager to find out where things would go from there!

Overall, this was a really entertaining read. Highly recommended!

Not For Me

This book had an interesting plot line. When I first read the synopsis I thought it seemed like a very unique new idea in fantasy. Sadly, it stinks. The writing is awkward, confusing, disjointed, and boring. I found myself skipping paragraphs just trying to get through sections of the book. I have read an immense amount of books,and a truckload of fantasy novels, and this one doesn't rate very high, period.

About the Author

Dr. Nagaratnam Sivakugan is an associate professor and head of civil and environmental engineering at James Cook University, Townsville, Australia. He received his MSCE and Ph.D. from Purdue University, USA. Dr. Sivakugan is a fellow of Engineers Australia, a chartered professional engineer, and a registered professional engineer of Queensland. He does substantial consulting work for geotechnical and mining companies in Australia as well as some overseas organisations including the World Bank. Dr. Sivakugan serves on the editorial boards of the International Journal of Geotechnical Engineering and Indian Geotechnical Journal. He is the coauthor of 3 books, 7 book chapters, 90 refereed international journal papers, and 60 international conference papers.

Dr. Sanjay Kumar Shukla is an associate professor and program leader of civil engineering at the School of Engineering, Edith Cowan University, Perth, Australia. He has more than 20 years of teaching, research, and consultancy experience in the field of geotechnical and geosynthetic engineering. Dr. Shukla has authored and edited 3 books and 12 book chapters, and 115 research papers and technical articles including 72 refereed journal publications. Currently on the editorial board of the International Journal of Geotechnical Engineering and Indian Geotechnical Journal, he is a fellow of the Institution of Engineers Australia, and a life fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India) and the Indian Geotechnical Society.

Dr. Braja M. Das is the author of several geotechnical engineering texts and reference books, a number of which have been translated into several languages and are used worldwide. He has authored more than 250 technical papers in the area of geotechnical engineering. Dr. Das is a fellow and life member of the American Society of Civil Engineers as well as an emeritus member of the Committee on Chemical and Mechanical Stabilization of the Transportation Research Board of the National Research Council of the United States. From 1994 to 2006, he served as dean of the College of Engineering and Computer Science at California State University, Sacramento.

I have had my Jesus Calling book for years and continue reading it year after year. I buy them at about 10 at a time just to give out to friends when I feel the time is right. I was very much looking forward to a Teen version for my nieces. I have to say I am so disappointed though. I really thought it would be geared more towards "teens" and it's not at all. It's the same thing as my book. The only reason i am giving it 2 stars is because I think it's very misleading, giving the impression that it is a "Teen Version" when nothing is different. I guess I'm not sure what I was expecting, just not the same book as I already have 10 of, and could have given them one of those without paying $8 for shipping.

Be mindful

I just finished "Another Jesus" Calling by Warren B. Smith -- very enlightening and helps you to put a finger on why Sarah Young's books are somewhat disturbing. I really liked them at first as they are so comforting. But as time went on, I realized something just wasn't right - there is much truth in them, but there are untruths and unscriptural ideas as well.

I am also very disturbed that the publishers (Thomas Nelson) changed the original introduction that Sarah Young wrote, where she said she "had been inspired to receive personal messages from "Jesus" after reading a book called God Calling." ("God Calling" is much used in the New Age community.) As this was controversial, the author and the publisher changed later editions to refer to "The Secret of the Abiding Presence" by Andrew Murray. That is very misleading and unethical!! (If you go to Amazon Books and search on "Jesus Calling for God Calling", it is still there!)

It is so easy to get comfortable and forget 1 Peter 5:8 "Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walks about, seeking whom he may devour..." And the Bible also warns us to test the spirits (1 John 4:1).
