The basic book that you need in your home

I received this book as a gift from a company who sell me vitamins. It is easy to understand and follow the prescriptions. It describes the treatment for many illness, recomended food, detoxification and also offers alternative cures using aromatherapy, homeopatic and acupressure. I love this book and If were possible I would give it more than five stars.

The aim of Veterinary Virology is to present the fundamental principles of virology to students of veterinary medicine and related medical, biomedical, ecological, environmental, and comparative medical sciences. It will also serve as a useful resource for clinicians, teachers, and those involved in research in many related fields of comparative medicine. The pace of change since the previous edition has been so great that the book has been completely rewritten and greatly expanded. Coverage of zoonotic viruses and the diseases they cause has been expanded as has coverage of the viruses and viral diseases of laboratory animals, poultry, fish, and wildlife. We have tried to weave the concept of new, emerging, and reemerging viral diseases into the fabric of the book, reflecting the new perspective this concept has brought to veterinary and zoonotic virology and related fields.
The arrangement of the previous editions has been retained, but our account of the molecular biology of viral infections is much more detailed and more thoroughly integrated into the overall subject. Similarly, our account of viral genetics, plylogeny, and evolution has been expanded and has become a more integral part of the book. This, of course, is built on accurate and up-to-date viral taxonomic usage. The classification and nomenclature decisions of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses, from May 1998, have been incorporated in this new edition.
Part I presents an overview of the principles of animal virology, starting with the viruses themselves and progressing to the infections they cause at the level of the cell, the individual animal host and the host population. The emphasis is on pathogenesis, that is the events in the war between virus and host that we see as acute, chronic-persistent, and more subtle forms of disease. Our focus on pathogenesis naturally leads to emphasis on subjects pertaining to the host response to infection and to the means of intervening in the course of infection: immunology, diagnostics, vaccinology, epidemiology, prevention, and control.
Part II is arranged by virus family, with major subsections in each chapter providing more specific information about the viruses, their classification, their molecular properties and their replication, and on the important veterinary and zoonotic diseases caused by specific viruses. The diseases are covered from the perspective of their clinical features, their pathogenesis, pathology and immunity, their laboratory diagnosis, and their epidemiology, prevention and control.
In order to focus on major virologic concepts and mechanisms that form the bases for our understanding of specific clinical diseases, minutiae have been omitted and much of the factual information is consolidated into tables.

Veterinary Virology made easy(er)

This book is highly recomended to those of us who must struggle through veterinary microbiology. It makes the subject decipherable, and does not slip into the jargon that is so often found in science textbooks. The book begins with intrductory "How viruses work" material, before moving onto the various virus groups. Each section of the book starts out with a general introduction on how that group works/attacks, wheteher they need intermediate hosts, lifespan in the outside environment, etc. Then, it delves further into each virus within that family (genus/class?) with sections on pahtology, epidemiology, etc. All in all, a very nice reference book for veterinary students. There is not much info on West Nile, but there is a nice section on Foot and Mouth. Generally, those viruses which are important in the West, plus a few that are important for other reasons arecovered. Other viruses are mentioned. There is also a small section in the back on prion diseases, which may not be important currently, but will be important to know about, even in te USA (Scrapie, Chronic Wasting Disease, just to name a few.) I highly recomend this book.

Addictive descent into Hell

Amazing offering from a young author that takes you deep into the pains, pleasures and thoughts of today's youth. Following the sex-crazed and drug-fuelled popular crowd through their clashes and interactions with lonely but unique outsiders, the novel keeps you engaged and makes you feel like another student walking the hallways, observing everything as it happens, all while knowing everyone's lies, secrets and hopes. The novel is brutally honest about how much of a hell high school can be for teens in all levels of the popularity spectrum, and beautifully narrates how various events affect the characters. Definitely not for those who like things PG-13, but this is a powerfully written and refreshing read.

The writer has captured the voices and thoughts of today's disenfranchised teens. Drugs, drinking, foul language and indiscriminate sex, are the daily experiences of the characters. We see into the mind and hearts high school students. Their thoughts are, violent, depressing, selfish, and hopeless. If this is today's mindset, there will be more Columbines in our future.

this is a very graphic and vulgar book about the worst teenage traits amplified. it shows what teens prob think and feel when they have to be explosed to bullys and peer pressure and what most teens go through behind doors. people think the shooters are bad, but what about the bullys that push them to that level of horrible. i know this was an over the top extreme simularity version of happened in the Columbine shooting, but its not the guns that kill, its the people who use them and the ones that push people over the edge. i read this in 1 day, it was like a train wreck you cant look away from...so bad, but it draws you in and makes you remember high school and thinking to your self, i can relate to 1 or the other side and see why people do what they do...and also damn im a lucky person not to have to go through a horrible experience as Columbine....

Not impressive.

The manner this book is written is not very professional. It neither explains why the formulas shown are correct, what each formula means, and how to use them in control implementation. This book may be useful only for those who studied this subject with other books and only need a formula sheet. Another problem of this book is typos. The author is recommended to have more teaching experiences and learn how to explain the subject. The publisher is recommended to inspect typos before the next edition will be in print.

Step into readers' shoes.

The best recommendation to the writers of textbooks is "Step into reader's shoes." Writer is an expert of the subject. He knows the subject very well. Readers are not. Readers need enough guide to follow what is written in the book. This book often jumps into a conclusion without enough intermediate steps. Equations come out of blue. I was perplexed by that the writing is sparse and crude. Thus I stopped reading this book and returned.

Excellent Substitute For Mr Miyagi

My company recently transferred me from Newark, NJ to Reseda, CA. Since I was only a yellow belt in Six Sigma the other guys in my office kept beating me up. I needed help, but with Pat Morita dead I was forced to find an alternative. After reading this excellent book by I was able to beat out Johnny Lawrence for a big promotion. I have my eyes on the Okinowa office next.

Example pages from the book

Our toddler loves going through this book. Perhaps the best way to describe it is to show a few pages selected at random, here are 4 photos. This book is excellent for any kid from ages 2 to 15. The writing is simple, but introduces enough advanced terms that it will expand the vocabulary even for someone of high school age. Kids love the way this book is organized like a reference encyclopaedia with a twist of variety in the layout every few pages.

My oldest daughter is getting more and more into animals. Not that long ago, I got her a big photo book all about wolves, that had lots of information on the species, and full page photos showing them in their natural habitats. Now and then she'll come home from school with a small National Geographic book that has some good info on a couple of animals, but is usually focusing on something, like stealthy animals. This Animal Planet visual encyclopedia covers just about any animal any kid could think of, and is full of beautiful photographs and good tidbits of information.

Let me just flip to 3 random pages and summarize what's on them to give you a good idea of what I learned:

-both male and female caribou have antlers, and the females shed theirs after having babies
-their calves join the herd right after birth
they cover over 1600 miles when they do their summer migration and head back south when snow falls

-the wandering albatross has the largest wingspan of any other bird (up to 11 feet!)
-the wandering albatross also only returns to land to mate
-the Australian pelican looks really stupid

-Atlas moths, one of the largest species of moth, only live for a week after emerging from their cocoons because they don't have a mouth (that sucks)
-the ornate moth has wings that, when closed, look like a blanket with a cool pattern

Also included in the book is a nice poster full of more animal facts and pictures.

It's crazy how inexpensive this book is considering all the animals covered in it. This dwarfs any kind of animal book my school library had when I was a kid, and if I was a grade schooler now and saw this on the shelf, it'd blow my mind.

ANIMAL PLANET ANIMALS: A VISUAL ENCYCLOPEDIA provides a visually stunning look at animals from around the world.

After an introduction and table of contents, the book describes how to use the book. This page should be helpful for young readers who might easily be overwhelmed by the size and scope of the text.

The reference book is organized by animal kingdom. After an overview that explores general information about animals, chapters examine mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, arthropods, and other invertebrates. Within each category, a few pages introduce the animal type followed by an examination of small groups of animals and close-ups featuring specific examples. For instance, a two-page spread on bears is followed by a close-up examination of the Giant Panda. The book concludes with a glossary, a couple pages about traits humans share with other creatures, and an index.

While the book is logically organized and would be particularly useful to children working on projects related to specific animal kingdoms, it might be overwhelming for youth accustomed to an encyclopedia organized in alphabetical order. The book’s consistent presentation of feature elements such as animal facts and feeding habit make the book easy to digest.

The visual layout of the book includes color coded chapters with endless high-quality photos that will appeal to readers who enjoy browsing animal books. However, the hundreds of information-rich pages may be overwhelming for student researchers seeking specific facts for class projects.

With more than 2500 animals and over 1000 photographs, librarians will find this amazing reference book to be popular across grade levels.

Welcome to Frost Station Alpha; mind the weather...

Ruby Lionsdrake returns to her Mandrake Company universe with a new set of characters and a new terrible situation. Within the first few pages, we're thrown into the action, as Tamryn Pavlenko discovers she's finally getting what she wanted -- and it's nothing she actually desired. Meanwhile, Makkon -- one of those genetically-engineered super soldiers -- is getting everything he desires, and very little of what he wants... not to mention discovering just how much of a mess his chain of command is.

While familiarity with the Mandrake Company novels may be useful, at least for spotting a few Easter eggs, the fact that -- at least so far -- no direct references have appeared means that it isn't required. It may help in sketching in the details of the universe, because details in this segment are definitely on the appropriately-vague side; all the details that are really needed are there, though, revealed as and when they're necessary.

Tamryn is wonderfully believable as the heroine: she knows when she doesn't know what she's doing, and knows when her skills fall short, but she's very far from being a helpless damsel. Her strength is in her mind, and she uses it as effectively as a reader could wish.

Makkon is also wonderfully written, an antagonist you'll find yourself rooting for; their "romance" in this installment, well, isn't. (Yet?) Their sexual chemistry, on the other hand, is intense, and the clash between desire and loyalty is incredibly well handled.

Reading a serial can be frustrating, like watching a TV show as it airs -- it isn't easy to have to wait and find out what happens next when you want to know *now* and you have to wait a week. On the other hand, it's wonderful to know that there will be more of these characters every week for the next while -- and I'm not going to enjoy it at all when this little series ends, and I'll be stuck waiting months (or forever) to get more with them in it.

Exciting first installment!

Great intro to this serial story, with action, romance, and a very hot male lead. The story is reminiscent of The Wrath of Khan original Star Trek episode - in a good way.

I love Ms. Lionsdrake's books

Read this series in order as it's really just one book broken up into different chapters. I love Ms. Lionsdrake's books. Her character development and description of the scenes are detailed without being wordy. And you won't find typos! This was the second series that I've read of hers, the first was Mandrake (and you might consider reading those as well since they are the same world). So far, I've read the first 3 parts of Frost Station Alpha and have enjoyed each one. A downside is that these stories really feel like chapters of one book and therefore I'm left hanging right now since as of now the rest of the stories haven't been published.
