Alex Callinicos is professor of European Studies at King’s College London. He has written widely about Marxism and social theory. His most recent books are Social Theory (1999), Equality (2000), Imperialism and Global Political Economy (2009), and Bonfire of Illusions (2010), all published by Polity. He is editor of the journal International Socialism.

The best comprehensive guide to Marx's thought

Callinicos has produced here what is probably the best comprehensive introductory guide to Marx's thought. It manages to be both sophisticated yet clear. Concise yet extensive. The book provides a short biographic sketch of Marx, followed by a historical sketch of the political and philosophical climate he was working in. It includes a very clearly articulated and well argued account of Marx's methodology and categories then relates this to Marx's conceptions of historical development, political economy and his socialist political project. It concludes with a positive contemporary evaluation of Marx's legacy and an appeal for a broader acceptance of his vision. What stands out about this book is the remarkably nuanced and non-reductive interpretation it gives of historical materialism. This goes against both the versions of Marx's thought presented by the abominable totalitarian regimes that purported to rule in his name and those presented by many of his critics on the left and right. By successfully showing that Marx's philosophy isn't the rigid and reductive economic determinism it is so often presented to be, Callinicos gives new life to the ideas of one of modern history's greatest minds.

Finally a coherent intro to Marx.

I've tried in earnest to find a comprehensive intro to Marxist ideology and I finally found it with this great little book. Most books on Marx assume you already have a firm grasp on his ideas, this is that book that supplies you with that grasp. Highly recommend for anyone curious about Marx, socialism, or the foundation of similar ideas.

I haven't got much to add to the other excellent review that has already been done here.Callenicos's chapter on 'Capitalism' gives a truly marvellous summary of Marx's 'Capital' (vol 1 to 3),Callenicos even manages to cover the 'transformation of values into prices' problem.
This is a marvellous aid for anyone who wants to understand Marx's main ideas.

absolutely fantastic

Amazing book. Excellent photographs and imaging, and just enough writing to cover the gist of it. I read it as a supplement in med school, for personal interest, and long articles would've made me put it aside. This is NOT a treatment guide but really an atlas of conditions that may present to peds ER. I found a case I saw in the ER that puzzled me and had to show the book to my attending. I also made a great presentation about child abuse based off this.

Incredibly Modern and Performable!

After comparing numerous Theban Plays (Fagles, Lattimore, Roche, Fitzgerald and others) I came across the one on Hackett.

I find it the most readable, comtemporary, up-to-date, powerful, poetic and most importantly...believable. It reads so realistically that I actually believe what the characters say...which makes me want to perform and see performed this edition by Meineck and Woodruff.

The print and spacing is perfect, and not to mention the price!

Theban Plays

Really liked this selection of plays that I had to read for a political theory class. Lots of really cool ideas are represented like the all consuming ability of power and it's ability to destroy the people who possess it. There's also references to the divine and prophesy that suggest that both an over-reliance on the divine and a sheer ignorance of the divine are recipes for untold disaster and misery. Concerning the study of politics, it suggests that man is subject to entities outside of his control and therefore is often quite fallible through advisors and his own overreaching pride to be greater than great and these failings prove to be a great undoing. Power proves a very intoxicating drug that corrupts even the greatest of men. As an added bonus to these great moral and political lessons, their actually a pretty entertaining and moving read as Antigone seeks to give her brother a proper burial because she sees him as a hero, while the King views him a traitor. The sixty or so pages of Antigone take us through a sorted ride as every character is dealt with some tragic loss. God, how I wish Hollywood screenwriters could devise something this cool.
