About the Author
Danez Smith is the author of [INSERT] BOY (YesYes Books, 2014), winner of the 2014 Lambda Literary Award for Gay Poetry and finalist for the Norma Farber First Book Award from the Poetry Society of America. His 2nd collection, Don't Call Us Dead, will be published by Graywolf Press in 2017. He is also the author of two chapbooks, hands on ya knees and black movie, winner of the Button Poetry Prize. His work has published and featured widely including in Poetry Magazine, Beloit Poetry Journal, Buzzfeed, Blavity, and Ploughshares. He is a 2014 Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Fellow, a Cave Canem and VONA alum, and a recipient of a McKnight Foundation Fellowship. He is a two time Individual World Poetry Slam finalist, placing second in 2014. He edits for The Offing and is a founding member of two collectives, Dark Noise and Sad Boy Supper Club. He lives in the midwest most of the time.

About the Author
Ken Lo has been a student of the game of poker for over 25 years. He holds an Honors degree in computer engineering, and postgraduate degrees in business administration and law from the University of Toronto. Well-written, comprehensive guide to HORSE, 10-games, etc.

This is an excellent book on mixed games. My experience has primarily been in NLHE, PLO, and Triple Draw, and reading this book not only taught me the basics of many other games, but also provided me with great insight into optimal strategies for these games. I also gained great insight into the limit versions of the NL games that I normally play.

I've read books and chapters on various games before, but this is the first that I've read that covers this many games with a consistent style of explanation.

The last couple of home games that I've played in that have included these games have make me a convert to mixed games because of this book.

Highly recommended.

Excellent book for begginer and intermediate level players

The book is very well written and provides the basic strategies for 12 poker variants used in mixed games

The information on the book is enough for a begginer player to learn all the basics, have a lot of fun and be competitive on those games on Home Games, , online poker microstakes and live poker small stakes on mixed games

The games on the book are:

Badugi
Deuce to Seven Trile Draw
Deuce to Seven Single Draw

HORSE GAMES

Limit Holdem
Omaha Hi/Lo

Seven Card Stud
Stud HiLo

Other Games

There are also references to many common mistakes that begginer players do on those games, so the reader can learn how to avoid them and some essential very good tips that can improve a begginer's or intermediate player's game rapidly

The are are also a lot of tables on the book about hand rankings and hand equities on these games (results from simulations) Those tables and statistics can be also usefull to more experienced players.

The book doesn't contain very advanced information on the games, it is mainly written for begginer and intermediate players.

No prior poker experience is required for someone to read and understand the book and play the games, every basic information and strategy needed to start playing the games and beat the begginer stakes is on the book.

All the information on the book are very accurate and can help the reader to play a solid winning game at begginer level stakes.
But beware, don't think that after reading the book you are ready to play against professionals in high stakes tournaments or cash games. Don't even think to try .

The book can be only your first step, after that you need a lot of years of study, research, experience and practise to be able to play those games on high stakes.

But the book is excellent as a first step and the content is enough to be able to beat the lower stakes after reading it

If the book is your first experience on mixed games, try to practise all these that you have learned playing online microstakes games or home games with your friends and family and have a lot of fun! Don't try to play against professional players ...

I gave a 4 to the book instead of a 5 because of this single negative point: The book doesn't explain to an inexperienced reader which stakes he could beat after reading and understanding well all the content. It doesn't give also bankroll management
information or advice. There a lot of high stakes mixed games and tournaments and it is possible that an inexperienced reader after reading the book might think that he is ready to play high stakes and loose all hs money very rapidly

I highy reccomend the book to any begginer player on mixed games and to players that have experience only to No limit holdem. I highly reccomend the book also for Home games, those games have a lot of fun. If you are used to play only No limit holdem to your home games and to Online poker rooms , then it is time to discover and try something much more interesting . I think that online poker mixed games are also much more profitable at microstakes and small stakes than No Limit Holdem and that online players should try mixed games, it worths the effort to learn them.

Must-read for MH370

I'm actually surprised that there are only 4 other reviews and that they're not all 4 or 5 stars, because I loved this book--totally worth buying it before it was available at the library. :)

This is almost presented as two parts of a single story--one is the story of MH370, and the other is how CNN and Quest handled it.In the first part, Quest rehashes the events of MH370 expertly, just as you'd expect from a journalist: he gives the facts only, in a clear, concise format. He includes a valuable "Who's Who" of investigators, governments, and passengers. The players and timeline, laid out in that manner, really shocks the reader at how bizarre this story really is. Loved it for that reason first.

Quest then moves on to detailing many of the subsequent issues, working through possible explanations for each--including the mishandling by the government, the lies and misinformation, the myriad of conspiracy theories, and a host of possible real explanations for what happened in 2014.

The second part (but interspersed throughout the entire book) is how CNN worked this story and Quest's involvement as an expert in aviation journalism. I get that he's not a pilot (a statement that he addresses early in the book), and some have taken issue with that fact. But I didn't take issue with it--especially since his aviation reporting had him flying with the copilot just weeks before MH370's disappearance.

Included in the CNN/journalist story was Quest's take on how CNN presented the events week after week. He also divulged some less-than-camera-worthy moments, like dealing with persnickety guests or inappropriate banter on live TV. I honestly hadn't expected the CNN portion at all, as I'd thought this was mostly going to be a book about the facts and consequences of MH370's disappearance, like other books. But aside from Quest's occasional whining (like when someone said he wasn't an aviation expert) and some unnecessary opinions here and there, the CNN info didn't detract (but rather enhanced) the book.

In all, I loved it for its concise layout of the facts and players with the explanation of theories and conspiracies (fraudulent passports, pilot/copilot potential involvement, battery packs, etc). He even offers a theory of his own, to take or leave. In all, this was a fabulous read!

Fantastic intro to critical chain

This book approaches The Goal in terms of how many insights it provides, especially for those working in a project environment and seeking to apply TOC principles. It addresses many of the questions that come up: what are the equivalents to constraint, buffer, drum, and rope when it comes to projects? How do we measure progress in a way that provides clarity? How do we sequence constrained resources when they are working on multiple projects? It provides a model for thinking about even a project environment as a flow of work that needs to be maximized.

New ideas in project management

This book is actually fiction, although it intended to be used as a instructional manual for implementing a new approach to project management. As a project manager I think the book is very practical and I think his approach would work very well for many projects. However, the theory that Goldratt proposes goes against all of the other commonly used project management tools (Gantt, Critical Path, PERT) that are based on timelines and milestones.

The book is written from a common-sense approach (in contrast to the approach used by textbooks) and some of the problems it addresses are:

1. Projects often run over budget but rarely finish under budget

2. Multitasking is actually detrimental to projects

3. Constraints arrise when multiple projects use the same resources

4. The true cost of a project (which Goldratt says is much higher than most think)

5. Negotiations with subcontractors used on a project

6. Net Present Value and payback period are inadequate measurements for the cost of a project

Don't be discouraged if you don't understand any of the typical project management jargon. Goldratt does a great job of introducing each concept and describing the basic, underlying concepts. The technical concepts are explained in question-answer form that would be similar to attending a seminar.

Lastly, Goldratt uses two types of projects (product development and construction) as examples in this book. However, the concepts and his approach could be applicable to many different types of projects. In my opinion, the determining factor for applicability of Goldratt's approach is the structure of the organization and not the type of project; the less burocratic, the more applicable.

Several Moderate "AHA"s Make This Book Valuable

Eli Goldratt continues his application of Theory of Constraints (TOC) to various business processes by focusing on project management with this latest business novella. TOC is a method of creating ongoing improvement in operational processes, as well as a general management philosophy. Goldratt introduced this theory to world in his best-selling book THE GOAL, where he applied the principles to a manufacturing setting.
In CRITICAL CHAIN, Goldratt builds upon the teachings found in THE GOAL. He quickly describes of constructs of TOC, while spending more time addressing some specific phenomenon of project management versus process management. This is where the "Aha"s come into play.
Goldratt's characters debate and learn why projects often run overdue and over budget, or finish with less completed than originally specified. The characters debate critical path vs. non-critical path tasks, early vs. late start, resource conflicts, safety buffers in each task, negotiating with subcontractors and suppliers, as well as the erroneous progress accounting/measurement techniques that give everyone a false sense of progress toward completion.
Each of these topics were useful in challenging the conventional wisdom of project management. Each presented some new techniques for managing projects more aggressively. In my job, I indirectly manage a large number of construction project managers, and this was useful in understanding some of the reasons we struggle to deliver on time and on budget.
For those of you looking for the same enlightenment that you probably derived from THE GOAL, you will be mildly disappointed. For those of you who have not yet read THE GOAL, I highly recommend reading it, because it will provide the foundation material (TOC) in much more depth and clarity.
For me, TOC completes the loop of operational concepts that I have pondered over my career, namely how to improve processes and improve overall organizational productivity, while eliminating "fire fighting" and bottlenecks in production. CRITICAL CHAIN furthers the progress of this thinking relative to a project vs. a process environment.

These examples illustrate the process of design. There are multiple structural components that assist learning. Checkpoints, with answers in the back, are short easy to answer questions providing immediate feedback while reading. Simple homework, with answers to the odd questions on the web, provides more detailed learning opportunities. The book includes an index and a glossary so that information can be searched. The most important learning experiences in a class like this are of course the laboratories. Each chapter has suggested lab assignments. More detailed lab descriptions are available on the web. About the Author
Jonathan Valvano has been teaching microcontrollers and embedded systems at the University of Texas at Austin for 33 years. This is his fourth college textbook. His previous three textbooks on the Freescale 9S12 have been used at over 18 universities around the world. He earned his BS and MS from MIT in 1977 in the fields of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering. In 1981, he received his PhD from Harvard-MIT in the field of biomedical engineering. He has over 100 journal papers, 9 book chapters and 10 patents in the medical device research area. He is a cofounder of a successful medical device company, specializing in miniature and low-power cardiac measurements. The reason he has received numerous teaching awards at the University of Texas is because he and his students share a common interest at the very core of the education process: the students’ own success. “It is difficult to find a professor that tries harder to educate and inspire his students than Professor Valvano” – Robin Tsang. Valvano lives by this motto, “There are three steps to immortality: acknowledge your limitations, ask for forgiveness, and then do something special today to make the world a better place.”

Better than the datasheet

A good introduction to this new family of microcontrollers. Looking forward to reading additional books on the subject from Dr. Valvano and other authors as these processors get more widely adopted.

When it comes to TI uC's it's hard to beat Dr Valvano

About the Author
Anna Curren has been writing inspired clinical textbooks for more than 40 years. A nurse and former Associate Professor at California's Long Beach City College, she first wrote this text when the one she was using bore no resemblance to her students' clinical needs. Execellent CD-ROM

I love the CD-ROM that came with this book. It makes the whole dimensional analysis process easy to learn and understand. After the first few lessons, I understand how to calculate a dose and an IV infusion rate and I haven't even read much of the text. Maybe it's just how I learn, but I find the CD-ROM alone to be worth the price of the book. If you have insecurities about math, this is the way to go.

Decent but many errors

My nursing program uses this book and it was helpful and did illustrate how to do the problems in an easy to understand manner. However throughout the book there are numerous mathemathical errors that the author has as 'right' answers. Towards the end of the book they were all over the place so we ended up talking to our teachers to ensure the answers we had were correct.

It is a great book to learn the process but I wish the author had taken extra time to review the math. So many miscalculations would be dangerous out in the real world.
